PLEASE HELP! Pinworm dilemma!!

I am going out of my mind now!!
I have had my horse for 2 years now and i still cant get rid of his pin worm!

They went for about 3 months after he got the runs due to too much oil in his feed and yesterday he had more yellow stuff round his anus and i actually saw the worm and pulled the bugger out (i had gloves on!!) GUTTED!! Thought they were gone for good

I have tried all the usual wormers and even had a vet strength solution made up that went IN his anus to get the ones inside!

Please give me some suggestions, i cant stand it and i am sure the others on my yard must be worrying now!
 
Have you tried Strongid-P? My vet said that they have seen lots of cases of pinworms that are resistant to wormers lately and recommended a wormer that I used Strongid-P and it worked.
 
A friend of mine has had this problem, the only way that seems to be working is to worm as recomended by the vet and also she has been told by the vet to wipe vaseline around his bottom daily, this is because the worms come out to lay eggs and the vaseline stops them from getting back in. It has been a slow process by seems to be working as less worms are now appearing in droppings.
 
Garlic is thought to be a good at making your insides an inhospitable place for parasites (in humans). Dont think it'll get rid of them if he already has them, but might just help you in your war?

Have you considered the natural wormers? I have no experience with them, just a thought as all else seems to be failing. I like the idea of applying something to his anus to either kill the worms, the eggs or stop them from re-entering.
 
I have just started adding garlic to his feeds again as i find he doesnt get bitten so much so you never know
Havent tried the natural remedies yet. Have ordered the strongid p and going to use the vas tip so we shall see, i live in hope LOL
 
My mare was really itching her bum - not sure where she got pinworms from! As our other horse doesn't have them. They are regularly worm counted but pinworms don't show up in worm counts. The vet said that they are not harmful, just very annoying to the horse. Gave both horses a double dose of strongid-p as this also kills tapeworms at double dose and after a few days the itching went. I hope it works for you!
 
Hi, one of my horses has had a problem with pin worm too! only one horse, the others have stayed clear. The first vet i had missed the problem completely treating him for a sore bum. It was only when I pulled one out and attached it to sellotape and drove to the vets with it ( the things we do as horse owners!!) that they told me what it was. i thought he had tape worm! However the second vet I had was very clear to me that you can NOT get rid of pin worm just by worming. They live in the end of the gut, that's why you see them when they pop their heads out. The eggs are transfered to surfaces that the horse rubs it's bum on. You have to kill the eggs with a good dose of Jays fliud. So worm you horse with a good board spec wormer and at the same time wash ANYWHERE he might have rubbed his bum. It took two goes but he is clear now! Good luck!:rolleyes
 
I had the same problem with my horse, Strongid P last autumn seems to have kicked it, nothing else touched it. Fingers crossed they don't come back. Same advice though, scrub everything he may have rubbed on and burn cotton wool etc that you have used to apply vaseline etc (haven't tried that tip), don't reuse anything that has touched his back end.
 
Well i am confident now i have spoken to a company called intelligent worming.

They have a great website and i spoke to one of their advisors who was soooo helpful!

They have said to start with 5 day panacur then after 6 weeks a double dose of strongid p.

It seems all the other wormers dont get far enough back in the gut to affect the pinworm but these 2 wormers do, so here goes and fingers crossed!!!!!!
 
Hi everyone. I know this is a really old thread, but for me it's a new problem. I just wondered whether you did crack it or not? I tried one wormer two weeks ago, and have been using a bacterial wash and then applying Vaseline every day but not beaten it yet. I have some Strongid-P to try but interested to hear how the rest of you got on and as to whether, 3 years on, you have any new tips for me? My pony lives out so not sure how I am supposed use Jays in a muddy 5+ acre field...:(
 
I battled this for months when I got my horse 2 years ago. What cleared it for me was panacur 5 day then 6 weeks later double dose of strongid p. I also washed all hetnets leadropes, buckets, disinfected the whole stable!
I now worm religiously alternating worming systems each year too.
Hope you clear them as they are a right pain in the bum! No pun intended ;) hehe x
 
Great, thanks for that. I will use the Strongid-P that I've bought and then move on to the Panacur 5 day next if that doesn't work. I will also look into that neem oil as that sounds like it could be a good alternative to the Vaseline. I've never heard of neem oil before.
 
We have just been through this and followed the advice of vet and worm experts (Westgate who do our worm counts). As the horses were about due a tapeworm dose, we chose to start off with a double dose of Strongid P, followed by a single dose 4 weeks later. We will dose again (single dose) in another 4 weeks if there are any signs we haven't got all of them.

Our vet told us the enema approach was now considered ineffective and that internal dosing combined with making sure we cleaned all surfaces, grooming kit, buckets etc. would work well. She did warn us that we might need to consider repeating the dose until we were sure we had broken the worm's reproductive cycle though.
So far, it's looking positive. A lot of worms were passed by all horses in the herd after the first dose, none at all after the second dose, and we haven't seen any signs of worms either (no more itching).
