Please help - puppy

I have had my new puppy a week now and he is 11 weeks old. He came from a lovely home and is already getting on well with toilet training etc, very few accidents and learning his commands. However I have two questions and please feel free to answer or comment on either.

1. He came from a working terrier home where he had his first vaccinations at home. However as he needs a ver certificate for puppy classes etc and after speaking to the vet we have started these again and he is due second jab in 9 days. Question - he has effectively had two jabs but are the 1st and 2nd vaccs for different things or the same but a booster? (forgot to ask vet). When would you start taking him out for actual wanders and meet other dogs?

2. The only problem we have is when he is left. He is crate trained and was from his original home, he will happily go to his crate to sleep with the door open and with it shut. I can wander to another room and he doesnt bother. However he is not allowed up stairs and as soon i go upstairs even just to go to the bathroom he cries and sits at the bottom waiting, he will interupt whatever he is doing even food to come and wait. He is getting better which gives me hope and i know he is only a puppy.

He is the same in the car. Will happily travel never makes a sound but as soon as i get out, had to go to cash point yesterday, was out for 30 seconds he was yowling. For night time he is in his crate and after the first 2 nights of 8 hours of yowling i took the matress and slept in the dining room with him in his crate. I then moved to the hall and am now in the front room, so he can sleep without me being in the same room, just cant make the transistion upstairs. He has a radio playing quietly. Any advice or tips, is it something he will grow out of and just realise i will come back or how can i manage it better? Friends who have had puppies just say, ignore it, leave him to cry and he will twig eventually - thoughts?

I'd carry on moving gradually away from him in the night so you can sleep-crazy! You poor thing! Cayla might have more advice re the crating, as although he is crate trained, he clearly has separation anxiety to a degree. Perhaps start some training, hunt the treat stuff to keep him occupied and to wear him out without overtaxing his little legs at this stage.

Re the jabs, just phone the vet and ask re what is next, boosters or new whatever. You shouldn't take him out til about 11 days after last jabs but he can meet other vaccinated friendly dogs for socialisiation. If you can carry him, then you could take him to Pets at Home, for example (don't let him touch other dogs there yet til he's fully vaccinated).

Does your vet run puppy classes? I think it's hugely important to get him used to other dogs as soon as possible.
 
You can't post about a new puppy without photos! I demand immediate reparations!

1. On the vaccinations as far as I understand it the second vac is a booster for the first, but the puppy will not be fully covered until two weeks after the second vac - please confirm with your vet though as I may be misremembering the exact periods of time before he is safe. Having said that, personally I think socialisation between weeks 6 and 12 is crucial so I take my puppies out before that. I avoid areas with unknown dogs which may not be vaccinated and areas which may have fox poo, which I believe may actually be more likely to carry diseases. At this early stage puppies can't walk too far anyway so I tend to carry them a lot which seems safer to me. However, it is a risk and you need to decide whether you want to take it.

2. Sounds like he is doing really well but is a bit anxious which is to be expected. Try to leave him little and often, pick a moment to return when he is quiet (if possible!) and reward him for being quiet. You may want to try a DAP diffuser as well but do check it is allowed for young puppies, I've only ever used it with adult dogs.
 
DAP would be a help.

I was at a conference at the weekend and one of the speakers has a deaf dog, she has a great system for letting the dog know where she is so he doesn't stress. She has signs that she changes, triangle means in the kitchen, square means up stairs etc. The dog just goes to where the signs are kept and checks which one is up.

Maybe you could do something similar for your pup. Also google, after you get your puppy, it's a free download book by Ian Dunbar. If you can't find it you can download it from me.
 
Thanks, this is my first puppy (only rescue dogs in past who were older and settled straight away). Just petrified am doing something wrong as obviously want him to turn out to be a happy, well behaved and stable dog so any advice appreciated.
 
If he follows you around freely now, I would try short sessions where he is crated when you are in the house as it could be he associates you being in and moving around with him being able to follow you. (as puppies do):D
I do have a crate training/puppy guide but it sounds like you are doing ok with his actual crating but if you would like a copy just Pm me your addy, but like boo boo's suggests, he just has a little panick when u leave his sight.
Is the crate covered with a nice thick blanket?
The key is to try and help him feel comfortable and secure in his own space at times when you are in aswell as out. Hence cating him for periods when you are in with some goodies or just after u have knackered him out:D

I would clarify with the vet re vax, but in general a week after his 2nd vax for him to socialiseon the ground, but get him out and about in the car and in your arms to keep up that socialising until he can hit the streets:D

socialisation you can start now with dogs that you know are vaccinated, but you would be safer waiting until after his second vaccination before walkies. Skye was terrible for the first 4 nights for crying but classic fm (???), a tepid hot water bottle, the washing machine, a teddy and a big old jumper of mine settled her down.
