My friend at the yard is at her wits end with her horse. For the last two nights when she has put got on and gone into the menage he has napped. Not just putting up a fight he would not go any further than half way up the menage (gate end). Tonight he refused to even go into the menage until i led him in.
When in there he backs up/ stands and will not budge, when she puts leg on/ gives him flick with whip he bucks and kicks out.
We have tried alsorts and nothing works.
He has had his teeth and back done and there fine, she has slightly increase his feed as he has been doing more work than when she got him. (feed is only hi-fi light and economy mix) He is turned out all day and in at night.

Thanks for any help/ ideas, we just dont understand he was improving and coming on well until now.

Ahhhhhhhhh I had this prob with Splodge for a little while - it started after he was asked to work incredibly hard and he didnt like it

So I went back to hacking and fn stuff for a few days and it really worked!

Dont know if that will be of any help tho!

I think this might be our next move tbh, its just so bl**dy annoying that he has won, but we tried for over 30mins and he was having none of it. I have never know of a horse as stubborn has this one hes like and old, grumpy man.

Thanks for your help tho!

I can completely sympathise with you, my horse gets the hump if he's asked to work hard in the menage, he's never done it with me but will buck with other people and even threw my new sharer off (he waited until she was trotting without stirrups, spooked, span round, bucked three times and dropped his shoulder just for good measure), luckily no-one has ever let him win but he just keeps trying it on the whole time, every time he's not getting his own way and I would have thought he'd give up on it when he see's it has no effect.
Took me half hour to walk and trot nicely on both reins the other day as he was being so stubborn and pig headed, I was so annoyed, sweating, and bright red but wasn't going to give in.
He reminds me of a child having a tantrum...
Your friend should try varying her horses routine with hacking out, lunging, in-hand work, maybe try schooling at the same time as someone else (not following them but just having another horse there) might be a temporary solution until your friend can get him to go forwards. Lessons would also be a good idea, as would getting his saddle checked, lots of us are in the same boat, just stick at it

what ever you do make it fun the more pressure the more he'll say no.

Maybe take in the school just you and him and a head collar, get him to follow you around the school, and give him a treat when he does something good
