I have recently started loaning a mare. I have been told that she hasn’t been ridden in over a year and her previous loaner had only walked and trotted her. Her owner tells me that she had sent her away, a few years to be backed and has recently had the saddle fitter out to check her saddle.

I have tried getting on her a few times and she keeps bucking and trying to go back to the entrance of the ménage.
Has anyone got any tips on how I can get her to stop doing this?

Oh dear - I think you are really going to need a lot of professional help - and to be honest I don't think it is wort you spending this money on a horse that you do not own.

I am guessing that you are not a very experienced rider, and in this case the horse sounds unsuitable and dangerous. I know that it is really disappointing but my recommendation would be to send her back and look for a loan of a nice sensible older horse - something that you can have fun on and be safe.

If you really want to continue with this one you will need a trainer, and probably the trainer will have to be the one to ride her for now.

Please remember that riding is dangerous and you need to keep yourself safe! Good luck.

Really sorry absx she isn't suitable for you. It sounds like she is going to need a lot of professional work to get her to the stage of being ridden. Obviously we don't know the situation but it sounds like the owner is taking advantage of loaners rather than putting in the professional time and money needed.

It certainly sounds that way, a loan is usually an older been there done it that the owner is keeping rather than selling so they do not lose control, this sounds almost the opposite, something they cannot sell because it either has underlying issues or is just too green and they are loaning to try and get it sorted on the cheap.
Taking on something that has not been ridden for a year is going to require a lot from you and help from pros and now is not really the time to be taking on such a challenge, a trip to A&E is the last thing anyone needs.

I agree that, right now at least, this is not a good idea. I would give the loan back before you are hurt. Or, if your heart has this horse, turn away until you are able to get a trainer to help. Don't put yourself at risk.
