As title please. Blue, the 10 year old TB mare has been lame for about four weeks now. Initially we thought it was a stone bruise and vet seemed to think it was too, and after what appeared to be an initial improvement she has gone downhill again and is off to the vet again on Wednesday morning for x-rays and more investigation. Vet didn't want to x-ray straightaway as she said that we should treat as a bruise or abscess and that if we left it til this week an abscess may show as a "pocket of gas" on the x-rays (correct me on that, I wasn't sure if I'd heard correctly). However it is now looking like it could possibly be a fracture of the pedal bone due to nothing having burst or abated. I have been away over the weekend, but got back today, she is still lame, hoof still very hot, particularly around the coronet band and added to which the fetlock is now hot and swollen and it looks like the tendon area may also be inflamed - I'm hoping she hasn't done a tendon as well. This horse already has navicular, spavin, hind limb PSLD and arthritis of the fetlock, and I have rehabbed her every time, so 6-9 months box rest for a fracture is out of the question and I will not put her through it under any circumstances - she has been through too much already. So if you could all just picture a MASSIVE, pus filled, stinking abscess bursting from her hoof on Wednesday morning, just after 9.30am I would be very grateful! Thanks

Oh no! I will keep everything crossed for her. Even if it is a pedal bone fracture, they do not always need a huge amount of box rest. It depends where on the bone it is. I had a horse that only needed 6 weeks box rest for a pedal bone fracture.

Thank you all - I have passed on your good vibes and thoughts of pus to Blue who I think seemed grateful for the support! That's reassuring to know Wagtail about six weeks box rest - that would still be an absolute nightmare with her as she weaves and rears for fun, but would be doable if there is a fracture. Keep those thoughts of stinky pus everyone..... :)

wheny girlie fractured her mind pedal bone I just turned her out as I didn't want to no rest her. She came sound after about 5 months. I will add she was 28 yrs old and retired.

Hoping for pus .......

Fingers crossed it is an abscess - mine has had one go one for weeks and weeks before and i thought it had to be something else (couldn't find any heat in his foot though!). In my mind if there's heat there it points more towards an abscess/infection.

Once mine got one and it just woul not shift, he had to have antibiotics eventially to get rid of the infection. That was the 2nd long term absecss he had!!

Even if it did turn out to be a fractured pedal bone, as wagtail said - it's not the end of the world and they do tend to heal pretty well being they're already in their own 'cast' in shape of the foot.

Hope they find the answer anyway, nothing worse than not knowing what's going on!

My boy came in crippled lame from the field last year. I thought it was an abscess and asked the blacksmith - who wa on the yard at the time - o have a look for it. Bin was so lame he didn't want to so I called the vet out Ho thought he had fractured his pedal bone - turns ou it was an abscess so fingers crossed for your Gil.
