Got two separate people coming to see the pony today - am really hoping one of them likes him and he goes off to do more than just plod round our field on lead rein. He'd be fab as a pony club pony and it would free us up to get something smaller for my little boy to learn on - we bought him at 11.2hh and he's grown to 12.1hh!!!

I know the market is flooded at the moment with ponies for sale so I know I'm lucky to have interest. Fingers crossed ...

Ok so he didn't sell - first lot were complete tyre-kickers wanting something for nothing and really got my back up and I wouldn't have sold to them in a million years. Second family were lovely and I would have been very happy for him to go to them BUT they felt he wasn't quite big enough (I agreed) and that he was too green for their little girl to go off lead rein on - also fair enough.

SO, my question is how the hell do I 'bring on' a 12hh section A without a jockey? How can I ever sell him as perfect for Pony Club etc when all he does at the moment is plod round a field on a lead rein with my 5 and 2 yr olds? How do people do it? Because I'd need a confident 9 year old ideally and who's going to let their little darling loose on a pony I don't know whether or not will be fine?

Arrrrrggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

By the time you have found the perfect solution your 5 and 2 yr old will have grown enough to ride him - ha ha.

Seriously, two thoughts. Do you have a riding school near you that specialises in children riding. They may 'borrow' him for a bit and give him the experience you are looking for (they get more riders in Summer, so often quite happy to boost their horse numbers and may have some riders who are good enough).

Secondly, contact the local pony club and see if they do a mini camp. There are many happy shetlands who do mini camp, you may be able to swop your pony for someone coming off shetlands and then swop back again in a couple of years when your children have grown?

Never know until you ask?

Thanks Canteron - I did wonder about a riding school but thought they probably wanted something that had already seen it and done it all - as you say, worth an ask though...

Sychnant I'm near Wrexham...

And yes, I know he'll be perfect for my two in two year's time and I'd keep him if I had the land but I don't and I want them to be gaining confidence in the meantime!!!

Loaning to a riding school could be a good idea.they could have him on lead rein with little ones and going off lead with older children. If he is good they may even be able to sell him for you once he has a few miles on the clock.
You could try and find a pony to loan while he goes away.
Alternatively send him to someone to produce and sell.Just be careful that costs dont get out of control .

OMG THIS WAS ME a little while agao still a bit this way

i have a 12hh section a as well also need a jockey she was unbroken 4 year old when i bought her i got her used to lunging and tack then a light weight adult from next door rode her.. i have had a few children on her i teach on her but looking for someone to half loan her so she gets more experiance with being ridden.

Bicky is generally very good i put a buckstop on as she can throgh a buck in i advertize locally lessons and loan i have 2 kids now have lessons tho need more cos hubby keeps saying the b****y pony needs to ern her keep

i have also showed her you could do that and put ad on your box or trailer for loan then people can see her perform . you could also ask comentator to put it out on the intercome so again peoepl can see her perform sounds like we have almost got identical problems lol

i dont have kids myself so it was even harder

I have beenin this situation. I either borrowed children that had learnt to ride in a riding school but never owned their own pony, they are usually very keen. You just have to keep an eye on them, take them to a couple of shows,PC rally etc. Short term solution do all the ground work, long reining etc and then send them to a M&M producer for a couple of weeks to get them going off LR and learn leg aids properly and perhaps polish it up.
I still brorrow riders as I am now to old and fat. I make sure they are well looked after, pay their entries and if I sell a pony I give them a nice cash thank-you.
