I am aware that I have to 'trot a triangle' but I am not entirely sure what to do. I assume you have to trot a triangle shape but can anyone elaborate please?
Thanks in advance.

you dress in whites. you all go in as a group then go out again and go in one at a time.you go up to the judge and the youngster is judged on its confirmation. the you walk the circle once followed by troting it give yourself a little room so you don't knock into the cones ect about 1-2 metres away allowing youngster to move as freely as possible and go and enjoy yourself

Thank you for that, so is it a circle or triangle that you have to trot? Dress in whites? My filly has white legs so I was going to wear black trousers, blue shirt, navy tie, hacking jacket and hat and brown boots. Would this not be correct?

Dress depends on what sort of show you are going to. Any County type of show, you are best to dress as in Hunter classes. Gradings or Futurity, you would dress in whites and running shoes/trainers.

it may be that you all go in together, walk round and leave to come in individually to show on the triangle. you may all just stand by the edges on the ring whilst others show on triangle.
you will present your horse to the judge (possibly beween two white poles/flower beds) to assess for conformation. you will then walk the triangle which will be laid out with poles, flower beds, cones etc. after one full circuit you will trot this triangle. you should then represent your horse to the judge and salute prior to leaving ring/returning to your spot. you can be asked to repeat any part of it.
wear whites as is said. even if they have white legs, i dont think it makes much difference. remember when trotting out, it is not a hunter class, you really have to run them out (but remain in trot) as they are looking for movement. the triangle is usually about 40 -60m.
to be totally correct, your horse should have a white browband and whites on the plaits but this is often not done.
you will then as usual walk around again as a group prior to being drawn.

not the best of pictures but an idea

Thanks for all of that, so with the whites do you wear a tie? White shirt and white trousers or can the trousers be cream? What about footwear?
I have never done this before! Sorry!

Hi RubyRumba

If you look at the pics in my signature..the three in hand photo's are in Sporthorse classes.
I'm wearing a hacking jacket, hat, shirt and tie, brown gloves, showing cane, beige trousers, and jodphur boots (the trousers are from Matalan..so cheap ;) )
The only classes I've seen people wearing white are pure Warmblood classes (they used to have them at The Royal Show) but normal Sporthorse classes it is hacking jackets etc. ...even at the big Scottish shows!

Good luck :)

previous pic i posted was at the royal highland show. all sport horse classes in scotland now go for whites (well every one i've ever done).
it seems the english have the best idea cos at least its a little easier to stay clean!!

Thank you, so could I wear black/brown trousers as my girl has white legs and is chestnut?
Also should the browband be plain? Also tail pulled or plaited? Thanks

Hello there - firstly, is your horse going to a "breed" sport class? Studbooks such as the KWPN, AES, SSH & gradings (BEF Futurity) are all quite similar in dress code.

Handler/s wear white trousers regardless of horse leg colour, (generally white trainers for running in) & white shirts. KWPN handlers often wear a red tie but most sports classes are happy with a white shirt, or stock shirt with a white sweatshirt over the top which can have a small stud logo. BEF & SSH insist on a correct hard hat too, up to recent standards. You can take a short show cane in with you if you feel it necessary & are allowed to wear gloves, pale coloured ones match best lol!

Horses should be presented with plaited manes, even foals, tails are optional although many do plait or pull. No boots should be worn unless the horses is being presented for loose jumping (3yrs) in which case front boots are permissable & you should take these into the arena with you. Colts over a year old should be bitted in a snaffle, yearlings can go in a headcollar (although sometimes a plastic bit offers more control), 2yrs + should be snaffle bridled (most sport horses wear plain browbands) & have a long, strong leadline too, it really helps.

Horses generally go in together, & are walked round the arena, then all leave & are brought in again one by one (some facilities may not allow for this so the horse will just be pulled from the line). They are stood up in front of the judge, often between two poles on the ground or flower boxes (as someone said above) so good to practice with plastic flowers! After being assessed the judge will ask you to either, walk away & walk back in a straight line from them - then trot away & trot back, remember to turn your horse "away from you" on the turn. Other judges simply want a walk out, trot back.

You will then be asked to walk once round the triangle, then trot (generally just two sides of it) make sure you give yourself turning room & stay on the outside of the horse - you wont be penalised for going a little wide on the turns, but do practice at home.

You will then either leave the arena or go back & stand in line, either way manners are very important & you can be dropped in the placings if your horse wont stand still for conformation judging or in the final line up (as I find to my cost often!!!)

Its great fun & is brilliant for getting a youngster out & about - enjoy it & if I can help further just shout :)

Hello! In Scotland we generally go with the whites for sports horse, even at the Highland - wish we didnt though, my bum is far too big! :D

Why is everyone confusing matters, when the OP is in Wales....?

...sorry if Im confusing things - I figure that quite often well explained replies help others looking for the same advice, (& not necessarily in Wales). Also, my comments re attire are widespread & will be echoed on most stud books own websites for sport horse showing - just tryin' a help out a little ;)

It is Sport Horse in hand at a County Show! Thanks everyone, still confused about the trousers though!

Go with what Truly said, my friends youngster is a dab hand at the sports horse classes and her handler is always dressed in the same sort of clothing as what truly mentioned. She`s always in shows such as Royal welsh, three counties etc

Royal welsh pics from sports horse class last yr

Hi Ruby Rumba :)...yes it's ok to wear darker trousers :)

Yes plain browband.

Tail plaited for yearlings and broodmares, pulled or plaited for 2 and 3yos.

Sorry Scottish people :)...didn't know they'd changed the dress code up there!

Good Luck x

Only snaffle bits for Sporthorse classes.

If you've an in hand bridle then you use a little nylon inhand bit but with a normal bridle then most types of snaffles are ok but you can wrap the mouthpiece if you think it too harsh for her.

I usually clip the lead rein to the noseband, if they are sensitive in the mouth.
