Please, please, take a look at this facebook site. The horses are in the most appauling condition and are trying to be healed by a very small group of kind hearted rescuers.

I don't think I have seen pictures like it for a long, long, long time. The white Arab, Prince Fluffy, arrow down the page and look at his before picture, being ridden, picture of beauty. Look at the picture of the after, of him having to be held to stand in a sling. If I had a gun I would shoot him. How can this happen?

I am sure any help would be appreciated. Anything to help would, I am sure, be appreciated.

The before picture is of him having to be held up, the after picture is of him looking stunning, being ridden.

I love PFK! They're amazing :)
 
I've been following these guys since they had a couple hundred 'likes'. It's truly amazing how far they and the horses they have helped have come. I think Na33 is the most incredible before and after case, poor girl was nothing more than a bag of bones.

The new grey with the busted eye they have in is heartbreaking, poor lad. It's incredible what these horses go through and that they continue to survive and work for the people who are struggling so much themselves...and here's us lot arguing over what colour exercise bandages to get!

Anyone who has not 'liked' them please do. It's a real eye opener to the plight of these horses, donkeys (and camels!).

ETA: Just re-read your post OP, the before pick is of Kareem when they rescued him, he was a working tourist horse. The one of him being ridden is off PFK founder Marte riding him a year later.

They are in Egypt, it seems like it's a mess there no matter what species you are. Most of the people don't want to hurt/starve their horses, they simply have no choice and can't give the animals the care they desperately need.
PFK team are so brave, once in a while they'll tell stories of what they've seen that day...it makes any problem I have seem absolutely minute.

its true, unfortunately in egypt the owners are either too poor or just dont have the know how on how to care for their animals, which is sad as the horses are their source of income and work. these people bring their horses to the PFK team to heal them and make them better. PFK are amazing, they work so hard, i couldnt do it, especially when the horses dont make it.

It's hard to know where to spend the charity money: on immediate emergency vet care or societal education. They have a terrible government which mismanages the money - there's been 4 - 5% ECONOMIC GROWTH in the last 25years and none of it has filtered down to the people. It's a land rich in oil and natural gas too:confused:
 
I've seen horses in Egypt and its not a pretty sight :( they are galloped in the midday heat carrying carriages of tourists to temples. And they are galloped because the egyptian want to make as much £ as pos so when a load of tourists arrive they have to get to the temple and back again as quick as possible to get in more rides :(
Awful... But then I've seen equally awful things in Spain. Unfortuantly we can only do so much and so glad people are trying to rescue these poor animals. I know if I had the means I would too :(

That is VERY true. Such a big problem :( The people obviously need educating, most seem very happy to learn...but what about those horses who need help now? I know I couldn't choose :(
 
Im also a follower from the very beginning, what the do is nothing short of miracles. I love the way they are trying to make a difference in what seems to be a completely futile world- I love the education projects the most, and the saddle pads, and the way they 'hire' the well horses from their yard to trustworthy owners to give their own horses some respite.
Its nothing short of amazing.
 
BBH - no as far as I am aware Marte hasn't been involved with Continental. I think she sort of accidently fell upon rescuing and helping the horses in Egypt! Whilst eveyone is on the Egypt way of thinking - please also look at ESAF (Egyptian Society of Animal Friends). Whilst we were in Egypt we worked along side them with helping to educate their vets, vet nurses and volunteers. It's a superb team who also rehomes cats and dogs along with working with horses, donkeys, camels, buffalo etc. They are also on Facebook and do some fabulous work. Dr Mohammed (vet) works seriously hard with very limited resources.
 
I too have been following PFK for a while and think they are doing incredible work. Marte and those who help her are far braver than me and have to deal with some heartbreaking sights. I have the greatest respect for them! My mum and I bought some of their t-shirts to try and help a bit, as well as making a donation.

The work they did with Dr Jude was amazing, helping to educate the locals.

The best thing people can do to help is to donate money to fund medical supplies. I think it's very difficult to get donated items into the country and they have a lot waiting to be transported already.

Gingerwitch, if you do have spare snaffles then you could also donate them to Friends of Marwari who take snaffle bits out to India. A lot of the locals use harsh, locally made bits and these are being swapped for the milder bits which have been donated. I took a lot of tack and bits out with us when we did our first trip - had to postpone the second one due to lack of funds. I personally do not believe in us with our Western methods going in and swapping their bits for snaffles. I do however agree with letting them choose if they want to do use a snaffle and having some curb bits to swap with. We always take their bits and in return give them the new one. How many of you with horses which are ridden in a bit other than a snaffle would be happy for a foreigner to come up and take your bit out and chuck a snaffle in? Not many I am sure and we have to treat these people with the same respect :) Food for thought anyway!
 
Gingerwitch - please do bother!! What I mean is we do not feel it is correct just swapping one of their bits for a snaffle. We took a huge selection of bits out to Cairo with us and did our best but to be honest it is very hard out there - there is a lot of poverty and some of the bits we had just swapped made their way to the markets that evening. We are very much trying to implement an education programme. The Egyptian people have been looking after their horses like this for centuries - (albeit fed better). For us westerners to just walk in and say right you need to do it like this will not work. Bear in mind The Brooke have had a presence in Egypt for a long time and they have been formulating long term educational plans which I must admit, we didn't see much evidence of it filtering through. I don't mean this in a bad way but they might have been concentrating on different areas to where were based. They are very well established and know what they are doing. We are looking at programmes within the schools, colleges and universities. We want to make hoof care (Cairo Farrier) part of the vet degrees within the Uni's but as you can appreciate it takes a lot of work and with an unstable government we cannot get government backing just yet. We are basing ourselves primarily on hoof care but the whole thing is a package as we also insist on good horse management which again we were teaching the children and rewarding them with brushes, bridles, hoof picks etc. Sorry I could go on for ages and have probably gone a bit off course!!

Exactly - not every horse in the UK is ridden in a snaffle - any sort of bit which you don't use will be well used. They do not use curb chains on their curb bits so we tried to take the hooks off pelhams and weymouths etc. In my mind as long as the bit is safe, fits and isn't rusted and vicious (as in the dancing bits) then anything is better than what they had. We spent a lot of time showing them how the bit should sit in the mouth. They have them very low and hitting on their teeth. The best tool I took out with me was my hole punch!! Would like one that goes through nylon as well for the next trip!!
 
Sorry i mis understood what you were saying, but i do see what you mean now.

What type of nylon do you need to go through and what for, as i can ask me mum she is into all this weird stuff and hubby was big in to sailing..
