I was leaving my horse for the night and locking up the yard on my own (was the last one to leave) and got in my car, but didn't have car keys, I thought I'd put them in my handbag which I leave on my car seat (secure yard and leave car unlocked cos its such a small yard and I trust everyone) but there was no sign of them. So I thought I must have put them in my pocket and it has a hole in it...so they could be anywhere.
I have a spare set at the yard so getting home wasn't a problem, but I was so worried that they were in my horse's bed (not much of it cos he had rubber matting), so I went through it with a fork, but couldn't see them. I'm pretty sure they are not in his haynet because I would have noticed them when filling it and I was with other people at the time and they would have seen them.
Has anyone else had a similar experience? I'm just so worried about him somehow finding them and choking instead of spitting them out, I don't think I'm going to sleep tonight

I'm sorry but secure yard or no, someone could probably just walk in, take the keys, take the car. keep the keys with you and lock the car.
It is tricky finding keys though if they have fallen out of a hole!

Dont worry too much .If you look on a earlier posting this week someone left a pair of scissors in the stable personally I havent done this but loads of people have done daft things. If you went back and had a look thats all you can do.Ill bet they will turn up in the morning on a nail hanging outside a door or something.

I know I should lock the car and I actually do most of the time but I wasn't there long, was only bringing him in and settling him, I always lock the car if I go out riding or whatever. I've got the fun of searching for them tomorrow morning!
They're not electric keys just straightforward keys so shouldn't cost too much to replace but would still like to find them. The main thing I'm worried about is hom choking on them, they aren't sharp so I shouldn't think he'd cut himself on them.

He won't eat your keys! Have you seen how sensitive a horse's mouth is? Mine can sort out pony nuts from shavings, and watch them pick out the blades of grass from between the weeds. Don't have nightmares, sleep well.

Thanks everyone. Now I'm getting paranoid that I caught him with the pitchfork when I was going through his bed, even though I'm always very careful and I'm sure he would have let me know. I think its just going to be one of those nights when I worry about everything..someone tell me I'm not the only one!

Im awful on things like that, I always go back 3 times and check the kick bolts are home etc etc....

I like your comment on the pitchfork - must get keys out of bed before horse kills himself so go through bed with pitchfork and impale horse - well not actually but might have - and so get into car in middle of night and scream down to the stables and poss crash on the way......

......its fine, the keys are fine, the horse is fine and he's watching Dancing on Ice on telly!

:-))

If you leave handbag in car, you are not covered for insurance. Always lock it in boot, even for a minute and even in nice, quiet country places. Thieving little you know whats are everywhere!

He won't eat them so I wouldn't worry about that! I'm always losing my keys and quite often because I throw them on the seat or I've put somehting in the boot I find them down side of seat or in the boot. Hope tou find them. I think if someone had taken your keys from your car they would also have taken your car - CHILL!

If you find them, let us know where they were, muddy field (picture of you on hands and knees searching would be funny) ha ha.

Stable, feed room, tack room in water bucket.

If you normally leave them in the car they've probably fallen down the side or under the seats.

Hope you find them

I found them in the boot of my car when I went to get the ice scraper this morning! Thank god for that, and for me having a spare set at the yard!
