Please recommend a mud fever preventer (cheap!)

Hi, does anybody have any (cheap!) ideas or receipes for putting on legs before they get muc fever? (and also to treat them when they get it!) thanks :D

prevent-vaseline, pig oil, turnout boots are good investments.
remedies-UDDER CREAM!!!!! - can be hard to get a hold off, all farm shops sell this. amazing for EVERYTHING. also good to leave on before horse goes out as is thick and lasts for ages!

Thank you- proper dumb question this, where do I get pig oil from? Thanks

Probably most horsey/farm shops too i would think :S not really sure, theres always a big 5 litre can thing in the tackroom were alowed to help ourselves too! its also good for making manes and tails soft and tangle free:)

Pig oil and sulphur for prevention! - or just plain pig oil if your horse reacts to the sulphur - I think you can get it on eBay :) Great for preventing it, and also means the mud slides off more easily from the legs when grooming xx

oh and it might be a bit expensive but it lasts AGES! and you only need to apply once or twice a week. im sure its not actually made from pigs? its just a mineral oil, like baby oil but without smell and additives etc.

i use "mud guard" gold lable - 3 quid a bottle :D

and sudocrem on the heels.... whether she has it or not (shes prone to just getting it there)!

she had it a fwe weeks ago and sudocrem got rid of it quickly :)

For a cheap preventer for mud fever use sudocreme on the scabs to heal then pig oil or vaseline to prevent. For one that works in my opinion but does cost a few pennies is Keratex Powder and Antifungal Spray.

Treat with Nozoral shampoo the moment you see any scabs.

For prevention feed a supplement that contains Copper and Zinc.

If you have to put stuff on their legs, Pig Oil = (Liquid Parafin or white oil or mineral oil) and Sulphur rubbed into clean socks works well.

The Liquid Parafin prevents the water getting to the skin and the Sulphur kills off any fungus that sets off the mud fever.

Emulsifying ointment BP from pharmacist - big jar will last all year, twice a week, to prevent and cure. If you're really keen, melt it down in microwave and add lavander and teatree oil to aid healing. Pig oil is just liquid paraffin in a big can.

I found this too. I somehow ended up with 2 big jars of it so used one for the horse, great stuff. Doesn't get as hard as vaseline in the cold either so is easier to apply. :) If there are any scabs i generally wash in warm water with hibiscrub to soften, they usually come off with that as long as caught early, then sudocrem. Cheap and effective :)
