As im getting more and more disheartened that Star may not be in foal as first AI, I was hoping you lovely people can let me know your stories and how long it's taken you guys...

Anyone managed to get in foal on first AI???

76% of mares that we sent semen to this year were in foal after the first cycle.

81% of mares we AI'd were in foal after the first cycle.

97% of mares we have dealt with this year were in foal by the end of the season (12th August for us), with none requiring more than 3 cycles.

Don't be disheartened... just be realistic. It's frozen semen, and it's late in the season. You'd be best to look at frozen semen per cycle pregnancy rates for the stallion you've used... as those will probably give you the best indication of what to expect.

Hi MrsMagoo

My 13 year old maiden mare got in foal first time with AI last month (she had her 28 day heartbeat scan on Friday - everything looking good) so there is definitely hope! We used fresh semen though - what did you use?

PF took on the second go. I was VERY disheartened after the first go didn't work and had a chat with AndyPandy about the technique the vet was using (remember I live about 20 years ago!!) but all is well now

I'm down in the dumps, mare not in foal found out today. But I have to be realistic, very late in season and using frozen. Going to look ahead to a successful year next year and start early! Good luck with yours, wouldn't wish this feeling on anyone

Cloppy - You need to start next season with a culture, cytology and biopsy. If those come back clear and healthy, then you need to change vet, or semen, or both.

Oh, well, she actually took first time, but vet warned me it might not be viable- and it wasn't. ANYWAYS I can't remember if AP said fertilization tended to work better if the mare was inseminated just before or just after ovulation (I think it was before) and they were doing it the other way round which is apparently vey old-fashioned. Still, never mind, madam is now with-foal

AP vet said nothing wrong although im totally in the dark as to what procedures they carried out. I am going to ask for her notes and probably go to jon pycock next year. Thanks very much for your comments, Ken did mention recently that mare owners should learn to be aware when there mares are in season etc any ideas what I could do here as she shows absolutely no signs (even had a look when vet said she was in season) an we dont have any geldings or colts. thanks

Hey MrsMagoo how was your holiday?

I put my mare in foal for the first time and used frozen Semen from Don Ricoss early August. she had her 16 days scan and we found that she was having twins!! one was pinched and was scanned again last week. All is on schedule thank god. Good luck with star. Keep us updated

All our mares this year in foal AI within two cycles...you do need to do some investigation as to why your mare wasn't in foal - management, mare fertility, stallion fertility or vet. I use the old adage in everything I do with horses - if you do what you always do, you'll get what you always got.
