Before i kill him!! Well, before he kills me!

17hh Dutch warmblood, 11 years old, dressage lad. Complete and utter tart about everything!! He is the most spookiest horse i have ever known and its getting to the stage now i have to be very careful riding him. A couple of instances: sunday hacking down the road, a truck was parked in a field we had to go past, stopped, spun, tryed cantering off down the road, had this for 5 mins until i managed to cross him over the road and walk on the wrong side of the road to get him passed it.
Another was tonight, took him in the indoor school and someone had left a couple of jumps up, that means its the end of the world for Jack! Spooking every 5 mins as if the jumps were alive, then because he is such a sensitive lad and the jumps upset him, every noise was deadly. Someone shut their car door and we spooked 90mph to the side, spun and stood snorting! And to top it all off i sneezed god i thought i was going to die :/

He has always been a sensitive and spooky lad but the fitter he is getting the worse he is getting. Im actually dreading our first show on the 30th! Has anyone had this problem and found a fab calmer etc that helped? At the moment he is on:
Hi Fi good doer
Lo cal balancer
Joint supplement
Magnitude

We can no longer ride in the outdoor school as god forbid a birds flys out of a bush! Out hacking we only stick to walk and trot because if we have a canter and something at the side spooks him, he will charge sideways, runs blind and will go through absolutley anything to get away from these demons he keeps seeing! Nearly knocked himself out on a tree the one and only time we cantered on a hack!! Ive had hes eyesight checked and everything is fine.

I think he needs to get out for a couple of gallops, have fun doing some jumping and xc etc to make him get over himself but he is just too spooky and dangerous to do this. If i ever managed to get him near a jump to go over it, (which i dout will ever happen) that would be fab, but if he ever knocked a pole and it made a noise then i have no idea what he would do!

Please help me lol, losing the will to live at the moment with him!
Sorry its long! x

You could try Horse First Relax Me, it has good results. Can you lunge him? Get some steam off, does he go out at all? My mare can be very difficult when she lives in, in winter I also gave her Oestress but he won't be hormonal!!

to be honest id spend a lot of time de spooking him.

I do all sorts with my horses, ballons tied to gets, husband out strimmering weeds in the same field, carrier bags rattled in the yard.. right to standing them beside cars and revving and honking the horn.. sounds like torture I know but so many people comment on my horses.

If hes scared of the jumps, untack and leave him in there with them. if he hates tractors go onto a local farm and ask them to let you take him up to one, then get it started up etc.

9/10 times it just requires ground work.. I cant however promise that you horse wont ever spook at a pile of horse poo on the road! LOL.

Loose school him with lots of scary things in the school, He can charge around to his heart content book full days use of the school and really show him lots of things for the 1st half use his field mate but half way though take him out so yours is his own, he will soon get over himself.

oooh, sounds familar. Is it baileys lo cal you are on? my lad went fizzy and spooky on that, i have him on top spec light now. He's ok on top spec comprehensive too when he's in more work. i'm also using naf liquid magic, which came highly recommended, although I have'nt had a chance to see the full benefits as haven't ridden for 10 weeks due to a broken arm.

My mare is a Dutch Warmblook and can be very similar but not to such an extreme. I've found the only feed she will not loose the plot on is Allen & Page Fast Fibre + HiFi Lite. She is also on NupaFeed and Listen & Learn. She lives out all day, in at night. There are still spooky things lurking in plain sight, especially in the indoor schools at Addington!

Seriously, my mare finds any feed with sugars in too much. Good luck

As others have said, lots and lots and lots of desensitization sessions!

We use Mickey Gavin. He's all for the hoss, but isn't one of your fluffy types :D

Plus, lots of ground work, get him listening to you and your body. Teach him to stop when the reins dangle, etc.

Just a suggestion but have you had his back checked?
My mare was very spooky and got worse the more work she was doing. It got to the point where she would spin and take off in the opposite direction at least 10 times on a hack and she used to rear and spin too.
She showed no other signs until someone suggested I get her back looked at as some horses try and distact themselfs from pain by looking for something to take their mind off it ie spooking.
My mare was so sore bless her she had 4 treatments and and 1 whole week chilling out then was ridden out in straight lines ie hacking.
I could not believe the difference. In the past year she has spooked a handful of times and even then not big ones.
I got on her today for the first time in 5 weeks following an accident in the trailer and she was an angel.

Ive had hes eye sight checked twice, and he has hes back checked every 4 weeks, saddle every 4 months.

I really didnt think baileys lo cal could make a horse nutty, he has been on it for 3 weeks and i really didnt even think of that... And funnily enough he has been a complete nightmare in the last 2 weeks. How stupid could i get...but as its LO CAL i really didnt think it was fizz him up. That will be stopped i think! Thanks all for your suggestions x

Could be a sugar allergy? My T.B is ultra sensitive to ANY sugar and becomes a complete nightmare. When I first had him I gave him a mollases lick, never again!

HiFi Good doer is still pretty mollassed (enough to send my boy doolally pip). AlphaA-oil is completely molasses free as is this http://www.badmintonfeeds.co.uk/products.php?id=65&cat=31 if you want something 'lighter' and similar to good doer.

I`ve use valarian as a calmer in the past with great success. You can buy it 'dry' in the Wendals Herbs 'Special Calmer', Lincoln do a 'cordial' version or you can by the root from a health shop. Although i`m not sure on the legalities of it for competition now as I heard they have just changed the list to allow valerianic acid, worth investigating!
Very informative link here http://webcache.googleusercontent.c...htm+valerianic+acid&cd=19&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk
