There is a campaign idea on 38degrees.org.uk/national speed limit on all country roads. The more people who support the idea, the greater the chance of it being taken up by 38degrees - a very successful campaign organization.
In theory, anyone who rides a horse, walks or cycles should vote. The increase in road accidents involving horses and cyclist in particular, has risen sharply. We all have busy lives but no-one should be in such a hurry that they cannot give consideration to other road users: life should be worth more than a few minutes. If we do nothing, the situation will go on getting worse until we reach the stage where miles of bridleways cannot be accessed because the roads linking them are too dangerous. Unfortunately, we all have to do road work sometimes.
Please sign up, vote and forward the information not just to equestrian friends but to those who walk and cycle. A letter/ email to local MP's would help. Riding on the back of the Olympics and the Governments target to get people into sport and improve the fitness level of the population (the Olympic legacy) it would also be helpful to email the culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt enquiries@culture.gsi.gov.uk If we cannot walk, ride and cycle more safely in rural areas, then where? Major trunk roads, 'A' roads dual carriageways etc - these have been designed with the car in mind. This is not so for 'B' and 'C' roads, many of which are typical country lanes. Unfortunately, there is a growing percentage of people who know nothing about the countryside and what they are likely to encounter on these roads - they still drive as though they are on a by-pass or in the RAC rally.
Please get involved, don't leave this to someone else - every vote and email counts.
Perhaps Horse and Hound could mention this campaign and help to promote the idea? The car may rule but it should not be driven with complete disregard for all other road users. A speed limit will not stop the ardent boy/girl racers but it will at least slow most drivers, give greater 'legal leverage' in the event of an accident caused by speed and make some people question why there is a speed limit i.e. make them a little more aware.
