Pls can I have some advice on my bitch?

My 2 year old bitch is currently in season, she's always been the 'heavy' type and usually bleeds for approximately a week.

I've been home from university since Sunday and Mum seems to think she's been bleeding for approximately three weeks now, and it seems fairly heavy. She is absolutely fine in herself and isn't displaying any abnormal behaviour.

Should I be worried? As I've not been here I'm not 100% on dates, and for all I know Mum may be imagining that this has been longer than usual. She's also quite squeamish so may be exaggerating on how bad she has been too!! I don't want to stress her by taking her to the vets if there's nothing to worry about.

I wouldnt mess about with ladys bits, would be down to the vets asap. Just wouldnt mess!

Sure its all ok anyway but not worth the risk! xxxx
 
Its very hard to advise without knowing what your mums definition of heavy is, but I probably wouldn't be too worried. I have had bitches that hardly show any colour, and others that make the place look like a slaughterhouse for weeks.:eek: As long as she is bright and eating well, and most importantly not drinking more than normal, its probably nothing to worry about. Perhaps a phone call to your vet just to check what they think on Saturday. If she is going to have heavy seasons probably worth considering spaying her if you are not planning to breed.

Thanks so much, you've really put my mind at ease. She is totally normal in herself, just leaving blood behind as if she's cut a paw or something!

I know it's no excuse, but with university I just haven't been around at a suitable time to get her spayed (my parents are not totally clued up on the dog front!), but am I right in thinking it's done as soon as after a season? If so, I'm hoping that she will finish soon so that I can book her in to be done over Easter so that I can do her aftercare. Am going to pop into the vets tomorrow and discuss options!
 
No, you need to give her time after her season for her uterus to go back to normal etc. Mid season is ideal, so if she is in season every 6 months then spay about 2.5 months from now. That would probably tie in with your summer break if you are going to be at home then.
 
My bitch is in season now so will be spayed around the end of July when I'm off for the summer.

I'm sure its nothing to worry about-just like humans some people bleed, have heavier periods than others but with dogs its usually around 3 weeks every 5/6 months (on average)

Ah yes now I remember, thank you for the advice - can you tell it's been 9 years since I had my last dog spade!!!

She has now come out of season, and is being booked in for her op in July. Many thanks again!
 
Just a quick word of warning, if she was still bleeding 2 days ago as your earlier post then she won't be out of season yet she will just have stopped showing colour, this is when she will be at her most attractive to dogs so please keep an eye on her.
 
Bitches vary massively and I'd only worry if the colour or smell was abnormal. Agree with MurphysMinder she may be at her most receptive now. If you run your hand lightly down her back you'll know as she'll 'flag' her tail. That said one of ours continues to bleed through her receptive period and beyond - it does sound like yours may have been the same. As I said, they vary massively.

As for spaying, generally it's at least 6 weeks before or after a season that it should be done. We have had 3 girls done and none had problems at all.
