We've recently heard about a lot of break-ins locally to us with quite a lot of stuff stolen. Has made me think seriously about the security we have at our place - we are lucky enough to have our own yard beyond our garden, with barns, stabling, horsebox and fields. We want to make sure our yard is completely secure in every possible way, e.g. heavyduty padlocks on gates, light sensors, alarms...

Would appreciate any ideas, suggestions or recommendations as really don't want our place to be next!

our yard is more or less in our back garden but we still got broken into a few years back !!
we have cctv, yard is always lit-up all nite my dog barks at the slighest noise,we have shut gates and a yard gate but no locks incase of an emergancy !! alarm the tackroom and get a donkey as they are good alams as well if anything is up !!!

If you havn't already why not contact Hampshire Horsewatch about your concerns. I believe they can send the local equine liason officer out to your yard to help with security advice. I think you should find details on NFED. Hope that helps

First thing to do is get all your tack marked and all your horses freezemarked.

Then install burglar alarms in to your tack room with a link to a central control monitoring station.

CCTV needs to be impossible to tamper with and be recording continiously to a wireless remote recorder which is off site.

Reverse the hinges on all gates and use toughened steel chains and padlocks that can not be cut with bolt cutters.

Also install a good fire alert system.

The only thing that puts off most burglars well and truly is CCTV (that they cant steal!!!) and one or preferably more large noisy scary guard dogs.

Our yard is in a vulnerable location for various reasons but our horses and tack are safe as our YO has 3 Rottweilers and CCTV. The physical deterrents are just inconveniences compared with those.

Many thanks for those suggestions.

Like the idea of geese (tho don't they tend to be rather messy?!), would I let them wander around the yard at night to guard?! We're looking into getting a guard dog or two, considering german shepherds, but our current dogs are indoor dogs which isn't really very helpful! This probably sounds stupid but would I have the guard dogs sleep nights in a kennel in the yard or just let them wander round the yard at night or something so they could raise the alarm?

Thanks blagdon re NFED, will have a look, tho fear we might be too far away in gloucestershire...

Will get going on the other suggestions too - many thanks
