Can anyone recommend adaptil or similar plug ins ? Alfie gets very stressful with thunder, fireworks and guns close by. There is going to be musket gun fire and cannon fire in the castle next weekend and he'll be literally climbing the walls unless we go out all day Saturday and Sunday!

i didnt find plug ins helped my dog at all, i also tried the adaptil collar but that didnt help. the only thing that helps mine to be less stressed with storms, fireworks, trip to the vets etc is zylkene. i give one capsule about and hour before the event(if i know its happening) and althouigh she still paces a bit she doesnt pant and cry so thats a good result for me...you can buy online from animed direct or v iovet, or get from your vet which is dearer...it doesnt need a prescription

I have heard reasonably good things about Adaptil and also Thundershirts, but have never used either myself so can't give personal experience. Have you tried desensitising him to the noises he dislikes? You can buy CDs for this purpose.

I bought a couple of adaptil diffusers for moving house (thanks to advice on here :) ) mainly due to concern for my oldest dog who is a bit senile. All the dogs settled in very well and the Ancient One seemed to get a new lease of life! In fact I have only just twigged that the timing of his going downhill and losing appetite coincided with the adaptil running out...... scuse me while I go and order another one!

I use them in my salon - and yes the definitely seem to work for MANY dogs, but not all.

As a bit of anecdotal evidence - I had been grooming a wee westie that was a bag of nerves from day one. Never used adaptil in my salon. I moved to a different location within a vet surgery, and they had them there. I put one in my room and the difference was remarkable. I could chalk it up to different location (smaller room versus big open plan space). However, that following summer I had taken the adaptil plug in out to plug in a floor fan and started wondering why that dog was nervy again (as well as a few others). I removed the fan and put the plug in back in and that dog was fine.

Now in addition to the plug in, if I have a dog that is particularly stressy, I spray my clothing with the adaptil spray for good measure.

I also use the spray in my car for one of my dogs who can be a touch stressy for travelling. When I say stressy, he will stand in his crate for a three hour journey rather than just chillax. Spraying the spray in his crate before he gets in he will settle within ten or fifteen minutes of the journey. If it's a long journey I might have to respray.

I've never used the plug in but I have used the Adaptil tablets for my GSD when he started traveling really badly for no reason, a couple of long trips on the pills and he's now back to his usual happy traveler sans medication. The difference they made was quite incredible.

They do tablets? I didn't know that! I have however used the spray in conjunction with zylkene.

Thanks guys, we've had back door closed today because of bad weather and took them out this afternoon so he didn't hear the muskets! I'm definitely going to try a plug in!
