Plummer Terrier?

Plummers are so called cos Brian Plummer originally bred them using all sorts of terriers in the mix; they are not a breed, just mongrels and they were always bred to work with a capital W, not meant as pets!
Saying that, many of them had good temperments - but equally, some of them were more than dodgy, certainly not meant as pets, they were killing machines!
I might be wrong (and more than willing to be proved wrong cos he was a nice chap) but I'm under the impression that Brian Plummer died some time back so theoretically, that type will have died out by now; anyone passing them off as 'Plummer's', is having you on! Also, there is no need now for that type to be born at all owing to the constrictions of the Hunting Bill; the normal terriers around are more than capable of dispatching rats and rabbits! Hope this helps.

BP wrote quite a few books about working terriers so you might be able to google!

[/ QUOTE ]Thanks for this info chick.... OH is set on getting some WORKING terriers - to be kept in kennel in garden, as apparently Tinks is too thick... and I won't allow my big softie to go hunting!!! (Well he's too big to rabbit/rat!!! LOL - don't mind him retrieving stuff but don't want him involved with live kills!!!)

Sooooo (don't know too much about it) but if someone had a B Plummer terrier and breed it with another terrier would this not be classed as a Plummer?

Thankies... I want a miniture Jack Russell but again I would want as pet not a Working dog!!

Plummers would be ideal for ratting and rabbiting. Good looking little terriers too.

Pre-ban there was always the s******g off of the breed that they weren't brave enough terriers to use on foxes in terrier work(though pre-ban many did). But since there is now a ban in place and your OH is only interested in ratting and rabbiting they would be ideal.

Pat the Plummer dog is still a breed in its own right - I also find they are softer than most JRT's, Patterdales e.t.c

There is usually a stand and a breed class for them at the Welsh Game Fair.

Mind you I'm sure your two would be good ratters wouldn't they? Our best ones are our GSD and and Inuit, they all go crazy when they hear the word (rats)...well apart from Nero - he's not quite caught on yet bless!

Shouldn't by rights as BP didn't breed them, although as I said before, they are a type not a breed so I expect 'anything goes!'

Your OH might jest but what about a Border? Although they could be older, about 18 months or so before they enter, they do make good workers and they are brilliant temperment wise (you only have to see how many on HHO have them!
wink.gif
) For other working terriers, Fells, Patterdales etc, you would have to be very sure of their temperments if you wanted them as pets too. Same as any breed, a lot depends on how you bring them up; If OH only ever takes them working then they could become hard and too keen, looking for anything to kill but if he treats them like pets, even if they are kennelled some of the time, that will give them more social skills! Nothing worse than being with dogs that just want to latch onto everything in sight, there's absolutely no need for it but that is how a lot (not all, I know) of the terrier lads have their dogs and think it's great that theirs wants to beat everything up, very macho - I don't think and that is what gives terriers a bad name which in the main, they don't deserve.

[/ QUOTE ]See that is what I wanted although it would be a worker it would still need to be good around the other dogs and children!!

[/ QUOTE ]LOL - well Tinks is brainless and too slow to realise what he is being asked - scoots around but misses the rats/rabbits - PLUS he 'opens up' (barks) before he gets to a rabbit!!

Finny bless him just wanders around like "What what" LOL!!

[/ QUOTE ]OH was also considering a Beddlington, or Bed X ... No although working they will be family dogs too... intergrated with Finn & Tinks and the Kids.. nothing worse than a 'savage' terrier that wants to kill kill kill IMO... well not if you want to take it out anywhere!!!

Sara, have to beg to differ with you there.
They are a type not a recognised breed that were originally bred from all different sorts of terriers by BP specifically to work - fox mainly but many fell into badger digger's hands - and in such numbers that they scattered far and wide over the country, hence their popularity and why there would be classes for them! Our terrierman had a couple and for years they were completely useless (but nice dogs to handle) but they got there in their dotage; I'm pretty he never had any more of them!

A Bedlington X might be better; I have heard that a pure B can be as thick as short planks! Our lurcher pups are part B and they are demons to work - but they have the nicest nature of any dog; big big softies at heart!!

I beg to differ too, the JRT is a type, yet you wouldn't put a patterdale over a JRT and call its a JRT!

It doesn't have to have been bred by Brian to be called a Plummer, originally they were a cross breed and are still a so called 'type' (like the JRT) but you only cross a Plummer with a Plummer to form a Plummer- as shown they are all of similar type - not like the JRT!

Plummers were not widely known for being badger diggers dogs, many thought they didn't have the guts to do foxes properly let alone badgers.

I met about 7 at the game fair last year and all were friendly little souls.

Replied as too late to edit:

"It doesn't have to have been bred by Brian to be called a Plummer"

I should have added "though most if not all original lines would have been bred by Brian & co."

[/ QUOTE ]PMSL!! Can you tell that he isn't flavour of the month with OH!!!

I think the final straw was when he knocked him off his feet at the Country Fair on Monday .... OH walking along with Tinks, Tinks growled at something but run away from whatever he imagined right under OH's feet and knocked him on his a*s, in the pouring rain into the mud!!

Lets just say OH wasn't best pleased and Tinks squeaked for the next 2mins even though he was only shouted at!!

I have one! They are fantastic dogs! Wilkie is the most amazing family dog, he will turn his paws to anything and is a huge character, he is also brilliant looking (although I might be abit biased!). He is the most intelligent dog you have ever met, and everyone loves him! I would really reccomend them, they are lovely dogs! Here are a few pics of him:

What about a Manchester Terrier ? - great little workers and smart looking dogs as well

[/ QUOTE ]OH says - MT's are smart looking dogs but won't go to ground when chasing a fox...

**Apparently it is legal if the dog is being used to protect game birds?** - so OH says!!

He is just a pet although we are going to take him lamping at some point, I think we will give agility a go as well as he loves anything like that! They are brilliant dogs!

Yep, perfectly legal and also if your OH was strolling with little Plummer off of the lead giving him a good run in the beautiful countryside and Plummer ends up down Charlies hole, that - providing there was no intent - which I'm sure there wouldn't be, is not illegal either...Oh the wonders of loopholes
