My mare has completely destroyed her (very wet because of the rain) paddock in the space of a day while I was at work - she didn't have her sweet itch rug on because of the rain, but the sun came out and so did the midges, and she has paced about so much in the wet field that it is a mudbath, bless her!

My question is, what can I do to get the field to recover? she will be moved onto winter grass in a month or two, and we opened up the rest of the field for her (it was divided in half for strip grazing) I'm worried that the field will not recover in time for the spring - should i reseed it? Sorry, i am still learning about paddock management!

It will recover in spring....you will be amazed how grass can grow through. It is not worth seeding it though as with all this rain it will not grow.
My lad trashed his one winter (before I got his management right) and he completely ploughed one are to the point where it was fetlock deep. That grew back in the spring no problem once everything started to grow.

Don't worry it will recover - a very old farner I used to rent grazing off said to always heed the resting advice of getting animals off any grazing by Christmas, then you would be sure to have a good spring growth. Leave it any later and you will affect the spring grass.

I have always heeded that advice with my resting fields and it's true :)

We have just got some honey comb mat thingys from robinsons. Can't say they are brilliant. But they make the mud a little more bearable for them I think
