Wel this afternoon was my poor horses podiatrist appointment- Much awaited by me as I've been so worried about this horse recently.
I have to say I thought she was lovely, Very professional and paid a lot of attention to detail.
She explained every little thing to me and took time to show each thing comparing them with my pony (who as great feet)
I'm a bit foot ignorant but she was incredibly patient and explained things in English!
She took detailed history, made reports and took lots of photo's aswell as watching how he moved walked foot fall etc.
She trimmed carefully what she could to start correcting his hoof shape and balance his feet properly.
She showed he his laminae was inflamed and he has infection in one place. She said it would have developed into full blown laminitis. I cant remember the technicalities but he was less sore straight away after.
I can continue to feed him as I am but with the addition of a supplement she recommended. He will also come in in the morning and eat last years hay (what I have left of it at least) and she recommended a strip grazing type arrangement.
Im also going to walk him in hand to increase circulation etc as he's become quite immobile out of choice * mental note... Use a chifney!*
As for my farrier she said by the state of my other horses feet- he trims and shoes nicely is more a case of missing things and overlooking small issues which become problems- she also asked if the apprentice does him whilst the farrier shoes my riding horse as apparently that's a very common problem. She's maybe hit the nail on the head there, yes the apprentice always trims him being the retire barefoot horse and the Shetland whilst he shoes my horse and daughters pony.
Its going to be quite tough as it means I have to bring all 4 in as this horse cant be without them! also I have to play it by ear and see if the arthritis is worsened by standing in (this is the reason he lives out 24/7 at the minute)
In her opinion there is no need for a cushings test - she pointed out several signs that he hasn't got- however I will run that past my vet also at jab time in a few weeks.
I was impressed though I thought she was very good and am happy ive tried it.
