Point of a martingale?

This might sound stupid but what is the point of a martingale? I know how to put one on but I've no idea what it's purpose is.

To stop the horse raising its head above the point of control. My tb used to wear a standing martingale out hacking as she used to toss her head around when excited. After a bloody nose incident I put a martingale on her! After she was hacked a lot (ottb) she chilled out and we took it off. Never used it again.
