Point of frog dissapeard

I know this year has been rather weird for horses hooves, and i have phoned farrier and he has told me not to worry BUT, one of the horses i look after has lost his frog??? the nice big part of it is fine, but as it narrows to the point - the point has dissapeared -anyone else ever seen this?
 
MY horse had this, and I took him barefoot 5 months ago. It has just grown back now.

Is he shod? Maybe it's because he is not using it as required and it has shrivelled up? Maybe take his shoes off and see if it regenerates back.
