Something's up with Charlie and his saddle. He's been increasingly reluctant to allow anyone to get on him over the last few weeks. When I first had him, we had to work very hard on mounting, so hard that it in fact became his forte. He would place himself by the block and stand like a rock. Recently he's been planting a few steps away and refusing to get close enough for anyone to get near him. After a bit we manage to get on and he's been fine so just thought it was a phase he was going through.

Then this morning, his rider came to ride him. Last week he got his pants in a tangle before we did anything with him (lots going on on the yard and he was upset from the word go) so we (for the first time ever) decided to lunge before riding. He was a star and then rode beautifully. This morning he was lovely and calm until E got on and he was immediately nappy, refusing to go forwards and quite threatening if she put her leg on. She got off and lunged him and he went beautifully, then got back on him. Getting on was a struggle, it must have taken three minutes before he'd get close enough to the block rather than the normal 5 seconds. Once she was on, he behaved but was clearly not happy, short choppy stride, tail swishing and a face like thunder. I'm pretty sure the back of the saddle is moving up and down in trot too. So that's him off games - or rather lunging and groundwork only - until we get it and a back check sorted. He's been due a saddle check for a couple of months but my saddler was only doing emergency visits due to lockdown and then when he could start again, he severed a tendon in his hand. I've texted today in the hope he's back in work very soon and we'll be top of the list.

Then I got home and had a letter to say I'd been caught speeding (25 in a 20 zone - I thought it only applied until 9am when they kids were going into school but obviously not!) I knew it was coming as I spotted the van and worked out it wouldn't be there if the 20 wasn't in force but by the time I saw it, it was too late. Today is not a good day.

Oh bullocks ?

Hope you can get saddle sorted quickly, that's so frustrating when you've been going great guns ?

It’s awful when nothings going your way just remember it will change soon. Maybe use the no saddle time and focus on ground work , poles etc. Shame about the fine. I feel the same Monday the yard decided my livery’s going up due to pony needing more care then they thought she only been there a week. It’s only a £1 extra a day but already paying a lot and I did tell them about the needs before hand. After which we agreed a price . Then a few other bits like saying happy to allow any physio, vets etc but now saying they won’t allow my physio as they don’t like her. She the only person who can sort my mare out. Now I am supposed to be doing a massive work project but more stressed about the bloody horses ?‍♀️

Quick update. I've managed to get him booked in with the physio on Thursday and saddler on Saturday so hopefully we won't be out of action for too long. I'd prefer it the other way round but he won't be ridden until the saddle is sorted so it doesn't really matter. In the meantime, he went out naked in the rain yesterday and got himself even filthier than Archie, who has 25+ years of expertise in the field, which was quite an achievement. He's as happy as the proverbial pig.

Update #2
Physio saw him on Thursday and picked up a few niggles bit nothing major and nothing of note in the saddle area. We have very specific carrot stretches to do to loosen up his poll and she’s coming back in 2 weeks.

The saddler came this morning. He’s gone up 3 saddle widths in 8 months! No wonder he wasn’t happy, the poor boy. I rode for the saddler to check and even though he’s not been sat on for a week and a half, and the last ride was a bit of a disaster, he was good as gold. The saddler was pleased with his development, said all the muscle development was in the right place so he’s obviously been working correctly, which was lovely to hear.

I’m so pleased I listened to him when he told me something wasn’t right.
