Is it true that there are dead fish and seals being washed up along the North Norfolk coast and a dog died after eating one of the fish?
Alec Swan - do you know anything?
Possibly worth being a bit vigilant if you walk in that area.

Only saw lots of happy live seals at Winterton on Sunday. Not sure how reliable the report is, however always best to try to sop them picking stuff up wherever you are.

Lots of news reports when searching it.
Thanks for posting, warned my cousin who lives in the area and walks her dogs on the beaches too

Just seen this post on FB, so possibly from the type of fish eaten?

Could you please share. .... Not one for scaremongering but please be extra vigilant when walking your dogs on beaches, especially at Cley, near Holt and Wells in Norfolk. Yesterday afternoon we lost Julie's beautiful 4 year old Golden Retriever, Hattie, to suspected poisoning. Today, my little Cocker Spaniel, Bramble, has exhibited similar symptoms and is now on drip and undergoing tests for suspected poisioning at Taverham. We believe that both dogs were scavenging on washed up skate type fish, starfish etc washed up after stormy weather. If you have been to a beach and your dog is showing symptoms of being unwell do not hesitate contacting your vet. We lost Hattie within an hour of our return from our walk. Can you please share, especially if you live in the area and pm me if you are aware of similar instances so that we can raise some awareness. Thank you.

A bit of research reveals that dogs may have been poisoned by eating 'something' from the sea. The problem, all so often is that individual owners go to individual vets and there's no collection system for information until it filters through medias such as this forum.

Do we remember when dogs were dying after they'd been drinking from certain lakes and those dogs which died after exercise in Thetford Chase? PMs revealed nothing, from what I remember.

I do hope texas and Bearsmum, that the PM on the dog Hattie reveals at least the origin of the poison, but unless there are traces left in the gut, the chances of success are slim I'm sorry to say, for the simple reason that the poison has been digested and is going through the system, not laying where we'd hope, in the gut.

Bearsmum, Taverham are also my vets and assuming that you will be under the care of Roger Bannock, you won't be in better hands.

I'm sorry to read of the losses and the worry and only hope that at least there are some answers found.

Alec.

I’ve promised the girls their morning run on Brancaster beach but I doubt I’ll let them off the lead for a run now.

The very sceptical part of me wonders whether it could be poison. It’s a huge bird watching area around Cley and Blakeney and there is always friction with dog walkers scaring the birds. I really hope it’s nothing like that. Poor woofties ☹️

update:
"Apologies if you see duplicates of this but keen to get this out there asap **** Interim update ****. Although we are still waiting for the results from tests on Hattie's and Bramble's tissue, fluids and blood samples there is strong circumstantial evidence of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning. Although uncharacteristic for this time of the year, the samples of washed up starfish showed very high levels of Saxitoxins, in fact almost twice the safe limit specified by the EU. Saxitoxins are very potent neurotoxins which very rapidly lead to paralysis and the shut down of the respiratory system. Affects us too. Keep an eye on your dogs."

Another dog (owned by somebody else) has now been confirmed to have died of the same thing. Due to the recent publicity, the vets are only just connecting the dots up yet so there may be more, unidentified cases. Very sad and worrying.
