My lad had the back lady out today, and she says that he could do with doing some ground work using poles and again using poles when being ridden to help him to start working properly through his back and help develop his back end. Can I have your suggestions and ideas of some exercises please?

Thank you

Poles on a straight line raised alternate ends good for walk and trot work.

On a circle, in the centre of the school at E, B and on the centre line, they can also be raised when they horse is working well over them these can also be used for canter work and will really get the horse using its back correctly.

Just placed anywhere they can really develop the reaction needed to get the horse picking up behind.

Use you imagination and see what helps your horse the most, make sure distances are correct for him, move them if he struggles or on a circle you can take a different line.

Be Positive, thank you very much for your suggestions I will try these.

Ladydragon, it appears apart from Be Positive the good people of the HHO forum don't do pole work ;) think may have to invest in a DVD or book. :D

I place 2 poles 40ft apart and trot over them, counting my horses strides. Going off that number, I then go for more and less strides with collection and lengthening of stride.
I also do it in canter.

Bizarrely, my horse really enjoys it :)

I do very similar to what Be Positive has already suggested and its part of our regular work programme. My share horse who had a terrible back was rehabbed using lunging, longlining, hill work and pole work and is a different horse now. Have fun - it will make a positive difference :)

Oh, and just to add, top HHO tip - potties from the pound shop are a cheap and brilliant way of raising poles :D (I sent my OH in to purchase 8 potties LOL).

Top tip indeed:D, the cost of the pole pods is ridiculous for what they are, I use my jump wings and put the poles on the base but it is hard work moving them so often.
