Im doing pole exercises with my lad inhand to strengthen up his stifle area.
Ive done normal poles in a line, square in a square so he has to turn the four corners, triangles to make him turn on the forehand in the middle of it without touching poles, to make the turn tight, fans for shotening and lengthening the stride, and two in a line and reverse back up them (like an alley). We have to keep Jack second guessing and make this as interesteing as possible or he will start getting bored, and then the naughty Jack comes out.
Any other pole ideas i can try please? These are all in walk.
Thankyou xx

I used to use raised trotting poles with my youngster a lot, not sure if that's an option for you.. i always did this on the lunge or while free schooling though.

Will be watching this thread with interest as doing pole work with my spooky boy tomorrow

How many human strides apart should trotting poles be if you're making a line of them ?? Talking about 16hh horse

Raised is what we will be starting next week

But the trotting must be done inhand too... Fruit loop gets too excited on the lunge and thinks he's jumping lol.

It can vary hun, i have to do mine all different. I normally have 10 poles in a line and not one of them are the same distance. I have to make him work and think about what hes doing so he doesnt get bored, so i let him shorten or lengthen his stride when he needs to.
If i done them all the same distance he would just march on and not think, get bored and be naughty. Good luck x

Fleabite, one good normal step for us will be about right, smaller or bigger depending if you want him taking small steps or long ones, take him over them and adjust if you need to.

Thanks, will do

Hope his stifle area is stronger soon

Have you tried making him back up through a 'tunnel,' of two poles .

Also getting him to stop with 2 legs infront, 2 legs behind the pole and then leg-yielding across it??

Woops, just read your OP properly, ignore the first

lol, yes we have done both exercises.

Thankyou i hope so too. He can *fingers crossed* go out in 10 days when she has checked him again, YAY... 3 months box rest is far too long IMO, poor mite x

Hi - sounds that its going well - good luck

think you've got all the possibilities covered with the pole work - when jerry was at this stage i used to do obstical courses

ie the fans but different pacing and the odd one raised so he had to look at each one then into bending around jump stands (light stretching of the joint under them is good - ie turn on the forehand sort of thing)

then the good old tarapulin - nothing to do with the joints but its something a bit different! - that water tray deana's got was a great size

only down side is putting the poxy stuff away

sorry about the spelling

Hello Kim,

Never thought about using jump wings etc, il have to get them out, give him something to look at. The tarpalin would probably be fab for most horses to keep them interested, but Jack would absolutley Shite himself lol.

I forgot you went through all this with Jerry, i can pick your brains when i need to!!
