Hi Guys was just wondering if anyone knew how you go about rehoming a police horse that is rideable?

Im thinking when sid goes I could look into getting one as i would love one they are amazing animals!

Thanks

Liz

A majority of the time retired police horses are retired because they have become unsuitable for the job or are too old to be ridden, there might be the odd normal case like maybe a centre is cutting down on the amount of horses. I would contact your local mounted police stables.

There is an ex police horse on our yard and I agree, they are fantastic animals!

The YO has been offered an ex police horse so I will find out some more details about rehoming and will PM you if you would like?

ETA: just because they're retired from police duties doesn't mean that's it - they can often make brilliant rc horses, well behaved hacks, dressage horses etc :)

What a great idea, you will be giving a horse a new home after he finished his working life.
They are usually by no means ready to retire totally from work.
Usually its silly company rules that means they are retired from the force.

I knew an ex police horse, and he was fab, he started a new career in eventing.
And yes they are great horses because they have been there and done it all before alot more of it and worse than a normal horse!

Thanks Moneybum! I really admire how talented they are and would love to take one on and give it all the love I have for sid lol!

Didnt think about Army horses i will have to look into that also as they are amazing also!

Thanks

Liz

Agree that it is normally company rules as to why they retire, age restrictions etc, not usually that they can't be ridden anymore. We have one at work who was involved in a football riot and resulted in a small superficial scar on his rump. He was retired even though it caused him no problems.

He went on to compete successfully in dressage and used as the hunt masters horse, hunting 2-3 times a week every season. He was amazing to ride, 18hh of bombproof horse :). He is now retired at 22 due to cushings. Do you know anyone in the police you could ask? We managed to get him through knowing his rider in the mounted police.

I would ask all of the charities that re-home horses.

My mums friend works in the police so I have asked her to ask one of the mounted staff what happens to them and if any are near retirement age will wait for one!

If anyone knows of any please let m eknow!

Thanks

Liz

I know for the Met there is a long waiting list for retired horses that can be ridden. Not sure about other forces but imagine they'd be in demand too.
