Had entered Swalcliffe as first 100 of the season but tbh I was concerned that she could do with a few more 90s! We tend to enjoy examining either side of the fences at times before committing to jump them but thought we'd just crack on at Swalcliffe.

Had the lovely dressage time of 9:06 which meant the fantastic wake up time of 4.15.
(Note the sarcasm. I think even Mum thought it was pushing the 'Mothers Day' idea when I woke her up at 4.30!) Arrived in plenty of time to walk the course which appeared to be really nice. Made very good use of undulating terrain (!) but lovely fences. Concerned about the ditch combination at 13 as my lovely horse is always concerned for the possible crocodiles and was slightly worried about the ground which was quite cut up after one day of competition already. Anyway!

Did a really nice dressage test - I guessed 28 but Polish pony enjoys sticking her tongue out at the judge so 33.5. Yet to see sheet but this does tend to happen to us a lot. (sigh). Any advice or ideas always gratefully appreciated!

Onto to SJ which has been our nemesis for the past 3 years. Warmed in SJ with a long stick and when we cantered into the ring I absolutely insisted she was forward and WE WENT AND JUMPED A CLEAR!!! We even jumped the first fence off a FORWARD stride! Was super super pleased at this point as had been imagining beautiful ways of falling off into the first fence and was delighted to have got through to the XC.

Onto the XC then: she sort of towed me into the first 4 and I sort of sat there happily for the rest as she seemed completely happy to organise herself. Had a slight mis-communication at 10 which was a double of woodpiles, I went for 2 strides and she thought 3 was better. Anyway, cantered on and we JUMPED the ditch! (Hooray!) Was super pleased at thsi point so naturally I proceeded to ride like a numpty to the end of the course with Polish Pony kindly sorting it out for me. Came home within 2 seconds of the optimum time to finish 7th!

Super pleased with the start to the season. Will be photo link up shortly but it is currently down.

On a separate note: Took my grey horse xc schooling today and lets just say things don't look great for Munstead and we're going back Wednesday! Hopefully the mighty Fat Sam will save the day...

Chai tea for those who got this far!

fantastic result BE100 all the way now ;)

for some reason I thought polish pony would have been your grey no idea why but i have it in my head polish ponies should be grey very unPC of me

Re tounge what nose band is he in?

Well done polish pony! Are you still planning to sell her later in the year?
And whats up with roo's lovely grey uncle J? Hope all ok?

Ps I LOVED your mum and dad's approach to a day fence judging - everything from wine to an oil fired heater, brilliant!

Great report :D and fabulous result! Lovely when it all comes together. No idea re the tongue sticking-out. Maybe just doesn't like judges?

Good luck at Mustead!

Langside - Nope. Polish Pony is my bay mare. Mr J is an well-meaning Irish innocent and Fat Sam is a general saviour in times of crisis!

Ecrozier: Mum and Dad loved fence judging and insisted on telling me what a lovely time they were having whilst I was stuck writing about the plus points of quinine or something similarly dull. Eventful xc schooling in that Mr J decided that brakes were 'oh so last year' and that drops were thoroughly confusing.

Langside - She's currently in a cavesson but have tried grackle, flash and drop!

Thank you for the comments! Cant wait/am dreading Munstead!

Ha ha it must be in the blood - roo has also suddenly morphed from a polite 'snaffle mouth at all times' 5 year old to a 'I'm sorry what? Is there someone on my back asking me to steady up? La la la la la this XC lark is fabulous fun!!' rising 6 year old..... Universal gag purchased for next outing!

wish I could have stuck my tongue out at my Swalcliffe dressage judge :D

Terrain was interesting - never ridden such a hilly course. Have changed horse to pelham so far this season but cant hold one side of him as he's so full of it. He charged off down the hill after the water and I thought I was going to die when he had to turn sharp left after the narrow gateway at flat out gallop. Really really need to sort out some respect!

Well done for 7th - great result :)

Really well done! (Make sure no-one catches you warming up for SJ with a schooling whip though - most def not allowed ;))

Is it not allowed?? I thought you were allowed to warm in with one as long as you jumped with a short one?! Oh dear!!

Nope - SJ phase is run under BSJA rules unless amended by the BE rule book. BSJA says that no whip over 75cm can be carried in the arena/collecting ring or 'in the vicinity of the showground' (whatever that means!), and no BE rule amends this as far as I can see.

You wouldn't be alone in doing what you did though ;)
