Polish SJer how much....Any thoughts please!

Sorry I know these are a ball ache but this is a genuine and much needed question....

A friend has recently imported a 9yr old Polish warmblood gelding, mainly Selle Francais breeding. He has been competing successfully at 1.20m in Poland, but obviously has no money on his card in the Uk. He is a reasonably good looking black gelding, about 16.1hh in height, good to box /shoe/clip/hack and was previously ridden by small lightweight female rder, so soft in the mouth and with a good technique. He moves nicely, and would do well at ow level dressage, and would pass a vetting but isnt upto full fitness at the moment. Was placed 2nd with a double clear at a unaff 1m class in his first outing last week in the Uk, and was impeccably behaved.

He is having serious problems trying to price him up because he has no form in the UK, and isnt up to weight at the moment, but the ability is obviously there, and he is having to sell him through unforeseen circumstances.

Any ideas please?!

Maybe around £5-6k? If he has the potential a knowledgable eye should be able to see through his lack of fitness and muscle.

I would say £4k - £5k. Problem is the horse will have serious money put on his card for BSJA immediately

What is his confo like?

Hmm, thanks, just difficult to know whether lack of money BSJA would be an advantage as could act as a schoolmaste, or not as has no form....

I'd price him at about 3500-4000. The problem is, if you price him too cheap, people think that there's something wrong!

Can you show the buyer the results he's already got?

Ah hadnt though of that Weezy...v.good confo, big bottom, good legs, just a bit light at the moment. Will be a very flashy horse as works well, just needs muscle again!!

Yes if it is imported you will be loaded with points and money in aff. so will have to be very good to compete or pay for downgrading assessment

Dont think he has ever been XC, and not 100% sure he'd be sound enough in his wind to go above PN...difficult because of his limited fitness....though they are going to get a v.well known young eventer to sit on him and see what she thinks...

There are two polish showjumpers advertised on the Equine Advertiser website, under the Overseas section. No prices on the advert but there is a contact address, might be a website, you could do some investigation that way.

Yep, thanks for that. They are in bigger classes, prob is I know how much they paid for him, which wasnt alot, but pricing is so different over here which is what is making it difficult to price him!!

Yeah we had gone down that route...we may be playing dressage ponies with him for a bit just to widen his appeal...wll tell owners to enquire with BSJA too about money....

There's no way of downgrading in the BSJA. As a 9yo he'll be given £2000 on his card immediately making him a Grade A. Doesn't really matter though as there are limitless opens around these days from 90cms or lower upwards. He sounds like he's done the standard contiknental thing...been jumped as far as he will comfortably go (there are loads of 1.20m / 1.30m horses brought over here each year) then sold. He could be a useful step up to BSJA for someone wanting to move on from Pony Club level and only being 16.1hh would fit that bill nicely. I'd say £5k but if you want a quick sale then drop another £500 off the price

About £5k, but then you say he isn't sound enough in his wind to go above PN so probably £3k.

If you register him with the BSJA you can ask them to contact the relevant show jumping associations in Poland the surrounding countries who will then verify what he has jumped and if he has been registered. They will then give winnings accordingly, if you just register him without going down this route you will have winnings added automatically. Having jumped quite a lot of imported horses i have always found out what they did abroad through the BSJA. It also helps when selling them that you know there history.

I would think if he is sound, straightforward etc you can look round the £5k mark, the more you do with him will obviously add money to his value.

Agree with this - have just had to do it for my horse. He would have had £600 on his card but having found out his actual history we can now jump discovery. I'd say about £4k...

i just brought a 6yr old and bsja put him out of newcomers to start with, but thet did give me telephone numbers for german, belgian and dutch showjumping associations as these corresponded with his breeding and they had no info of him so he has had his card wiped clean and is back in british novice now.
it was really easy. i just faxed his passport details to each one and had all my replies in 3 days and a week later his money was gone! magic!

I went to a dealers and was looking at a dutch horse - which would have shown up as £0 when the BSJA checked her out but in actual fact had been winning 1.25 classes Sweden. BSJA wouldn't have checked Sweden. The dealer apparently does this all the time.
