Interesting little conversation going on elsewhere regarding the keeping of bute on your yard/farm/stables/at home.

Just wondering how many people keep bute for emergencies and wondering how in the world anyone can run a competent horse yard without it?

Yes, I do like to keep a dozen in her first aid kit but the other girls on the yard don't.

ETS: It seems normal to me, no different from bandages, animalintex and gamgee etc. Funny though, the other girls don't have a ready supply of those either

I do now for his arthritis, but never used to. My friend always had tons so I just borrowed hers if I needed it lol. I never used bute for the first 8 years I had Chex though - he just never needed it. I can see how its handy to have some around.

Poll results show what I would have expected.

Yes I have 2 huge buckets of bute in my vet cupboard (we don't have those teeny little sachets over here) and in England my vet would always give me about 10 sachets to keep in reserve incase of emergency.

I have some left from various injuries etc. I check every-so-often to make sure they are still in date as it is very rare we need it - but I do like to keep some handy.

I dont have bute, I have never needed it.*touches wood*
I can get hold of it from a friend down the road it the need arises though.

I have a pretty comprehensive supply of bute/antibiotics mostly because I live in the wilds compared to many people and our vet is 20 odd miles away.
I don't give them without discussing with him first and he is happy to trust me.
I can inject or give them as a powder , the powders are much more expensive so I made sure I learned what to do when injecting or not, but it's important for us to have them ready here as it can take half a day to drive to the surgery and back! One of our newer vets however worried me telling me there may be a nasty reaction to injection (horse collapsing) something no-one else has ever told me in over forty years of injecting my horses.
I think most people are aware that bute can cause stomach problems and don't use it unless they really need to.

Yep, always have some in.

I wouldn't dream of not having some parectemol / ibuprofen in my home first aid kit, so likewise wouldn't dream of not having some bute in my horsey first aid kit...

I don't have any but a friend at the yard has some for her aged horses and she has offered me some in the past so in an emergency -unless I needed a vet that is- I would happily call them. I think I'm about the only one on the yard that even has a first aid box as I have not seen many other people with items except for a few odd things. I have always said if anyone needed anything at all I would be happy to help or else yo has a key to my stuff. I don't believe in being selfish about stuff like that because if someone offered me any medical/first aid items in an emergency I would happily take it so therefore why shouldn't I offer the same.

I don't but I wish I did. How do people get a hold of it?

However, I do have a great vet down the road who if I phone up and explain that I need some will prescribe it without a coming out cos she trust my judgment on the minor things.

After years of having old horses, I always keep bute to hand.

Cairo does on the odd occasion look a little pottery - normally after doing a impression of a 2 year old in the field playing with Chancer and I give him some for a couple of days to keep him comfortable and time to recover.

I like to keep about 20 sachets as Cairo needs at least 2 if not 3 a day to have any effect due to his large size.

Yep, of course! I have bute in pills or injectable. This is freely available from any vet/pet shop over here, as is ACP, DMSO and most antibiotics. And my vet knows I've got it.
Interestingly it always seems to be someone else on my yard who needs my stuff....

i have a good supply of bute and of danillon. When ever my vet comes up for a vaccine i ask her for a supply as i have older horses who sometimes have artheritic days.
The danillon is more expensive so it only gets used for the one i cant get bute into (silly animal wont eat a feed with it in, can smell it even on a treacle sandwich and it took 6 honey sandwiches to get one sachet of bute into him, he still doesnt like danillon but doesnt mind it in a treacle sandwich)

I have most things; bute (gone through a boxfull this week), danilon (for one with dodgy kidneys), dexadreson (horse prone to allergic reactions), finadyne (any colic), sedalin (for nutjobs), depocillin (gone through 2 bottles this week), trimediazine (surprisingly havent used any this week, but used 3 boxes last week).
Please remember I have 50 horses!

Oh GTs you do make me chuckle!

Nine times out of ten when we have rung the vet to discuss a problem, they have said to give Bute for a day or two and ring back if the problem continues or worsens. They seem to expect horse owners to keep a supply, and why wouldn't anyone do so?

Well it's true - I think the most we wait for a vet is 20 minutes for general stuff. Emergencies probably 4 minutes max.

Have a few hiding away and I know YO has more if emergency.

My vet has on a number of occasions when talked over phone said 'give a couple of bute and i will see it in a few days if not improved' or the like and I have only once actually had to drive to the surgery to pick some up
