My OH did a wonderful thing last month. For my birthday he bought me a gorgeous 2 year old called Spring. I'd had to sell my Arab Jamie after we got married and started a family. The children are more independent now but it was still a big surprise as my OH is not prone to making grand gestures.

Spring and I are now settled at a small yard I found about 3 miles from home. He's been brilliant so far. He's taken everything in his stride and hasnt been phased by anything. Which is just as well because to me he's HUGE. I've only had Arabs and Arab X's in the past, so at 1cm below 16hh already Spring is quite imposing to my 5' nothing.

Because I have no experience of young horses of his size, I wanted to ask people on here to guestimate what height he is likely to make. Just a ball park. We dont know the size of his parents, but his dam was a TB and his sire a WB (Polish, we've been told). Spring is still slightly rump high and needs to fill out a lot. That said, my vet remarked on what a big boy he was and thought he was a 3 year old already in work!

I am just hoping I dont end up looking like a pea on a drum because I've got horibly short legs

Thing is TB's can be small and WB's can be massive. Theres a thread in the picture gallery of heights of riders on different horses, go have a look, wouldn't worry about the pea on a drum thing

True but Polish WB's are know for being as large as say there German/Dutch counterparts. I would think 16.1 to 16.2 that won't be too tall for you if you're 5', I'm 5'3" and used to ride a 17.3 Bavarian WB!

My WB x TB was about 15hh as a 3 year old and didnt stop growing (in all directions) untill she was about 8. She is a good 16.3hh now. She is Belgian, not Polish is that makes a difference. She was a scrawny weed at 3 though, the same cant be said now.

Thanks to everyone who responded. So 16.2 seems the average guess. He is 16.0hh on his rump, so I guess I should be relieved he'll only grow another 2 inches before he stops. LOL.

I've only ridden horses up to 15 hands, mostly 14.2 Arabs so it's going to be a new experience for me backing him next year. My vet said I should be 'doing something with him' because he's so big. I thought the opposite! That a big horse would need longer to mature physically.

I might be missing something here but if he is 16hh on his rump already and is only 2 i would say he will be much bigger than 16.2hh sorry. My friends 7/8th TB was 16.2 at 3 and is now 17.2hh sorry he probably wont grow that big but i would be surprised if he stops at 16.2hh.

If he is a big boy i would recommend you establish his manners now and don’t give an inch it is so important that any horses has good manners but the bigger horses can do a lot of damage without meaning it. My lad is 18hh and although he is very gentle and very respectful i still operate a zero tolerance approach to his manners, if I say back i mean back etc. no half measures.

Good luck.
