So if you were given the choice which would you prefer?
After my own experience I think I prefer the rented field option. Yes it poses some logistical problems and we have no arena or stables but I find it very relaxing to just be there on my own with the horses or having a day (of poo picking ) with my mum :)
It works out that to keep the two of our horses at the field it costs us half what it was costing my mum on part livery for her mare
It's nice to know that the time spent at the horses will now be relaxing "quiet time" free from outside stress and no need to interact with another human being even though I do miss the company of the other liveries at times ;)
That if we want anything eg. field shelters/ something fixed the landowner is happy for us to build them/ will fix things promptly and apart from that we have no contact with them.... Am I anti-social or is it not just me that prefers it this way?

I completely agree with you. Rented field everytime!

Although I love having facilities, my two are much happier being out and mooching around at their own free will. And I'm much happier with having more freedom!

ive done both

right now i prefer a yard as i have a youngster and need help/advice

but when i had my two i loved my field - just me and my girls :)

i coudlnt go back to just a field now - i could happily rent a yard on my own and take on a couple of liveries - but not on my own :)

I sort of already have the Rented Field option.

It's actually Grass Livery, but I manage the field myself, so can divide for strip grazing in the summer, I put out the hay and choose where to put it in the winter. I have my Horse Agility stuff stored, and can whip it out on days I can't ride and so keep horse and myself entertained that way. I can ride in the field too. Weeks can go past without me ever having to visit the yard at all (possibly months, in fact!).

I actually popped down to the yard (a short drive from the field) this evening. I'd been putting out hay, and spent a little while in the field with the horses, watching them munching happily, listening to the owls flying through the wood, watching the stars.

Then I went down to the yard. It was full of people, mucking out, chatting, filling haynets, standing around having cups of tea... and I remembered why I don't keep my horse at a yard :) They seem a nice bunch, but it doesn't seem to be about the horses for them, but more about the social aspect of it all? I didn't see a single person interacting with a horse at all! And it's noisy down there!

Nice quiet field with me and horses is my first choice every time :)

And this ^ *smacks head with palm* most important part! :o Our two seem to be so much happier being able to just amble about and munch with no other horses to compete with. The field has more grass than mud AND Loki the mega escape artist hasn't tried to get out of the field once! Although to be fair the fencing in the field is much more secure here ;):D

Livery yard. I don't know enough about horse care to go out on my own without having a reliable YO/YM to back me up, and I have health issues/stupid working hours that mean I need to be able to have a horse on full livery.

I mean, I'd like to have the knowledge/time/health to be able to keep a horse in a field behind my house but, realistically, that ain't gonna happen.

I have the best of both worlds at the moment. 1 on DIY livery on a large yard and 2 at a field/stables rented by myself. The 2 mares live out, first time ever for them, and its down to injuries in the past, suits them better. I have 3 stables and a barn, a purpose built field shelter, electricity, freedom to do whatever I want and its great. A couple of ladies come and ride them with me and I love it. I poo pick my fields and make my own decisions, wouldnt change a thing, well I would, there are tennis courts and would love to turn it into an arena!

The 1 on livery is there because I use the facilities eg the schools, horse shower and toilet! I have a few special friends on there who I would miss so as I said best of both worlds. However, the downside is the busyness of the yard and of course the bitchiness that comes with the territory, the turnover of liveries and the restrictions about turnout.

I do enjoy the quietness of my private facilities, the girls have a more varied environment and theres lots of wildlife, pheasants, owls, rabbits and the occasional fox..its great! They are definitely happier being turned out 24/7 and the one who had the tendon injuries is sound, the kissing spine one looks comfortable and is ridden, time will tell with her.
