I'd planned to get most of it off with scissors and then just tidy it up with clippers! Even sent hubby to shop for scissors, just in case I get all giddle and just do it!
I don't dislike 'traditional' cobs with all the hair on, full mane and feathers etc but I suppose it depends on what is practical for both you and her.
If your planning to do a lot with her over winter, dressage, flat work and start jumping at shows, getting her really fit etc then personally I'd have it all off , it's pratical for washing down, if she has feather mites or mud fever and of course and looks nice and smart.
I wouldn't clip her full body just yet if she'd got a fine summer coat, so for the moment if I was going to do it, then I'd just clip the legs, hog the mane and pull her tail but you need to be good at blending the legs in, so it might take you a few goes before you get the knack.
I would say all or nothing!! Don;t hog and leave legs. If you are hogging, take the lot off.
Years ago I bought a coloured cob from a local gypsy. He had rubbed his mane on barbed wire and it was sticking straight up short in places and really long in others. I thought, well I'll hog it and start again. This cob look ok as he was, but when I hogged him it absolutely TRANSFORMED him!! He looked fantastic, and becuase i rode a lot, spent the winter fully clipped and hogged.
If you don;t ride so much, you could blanket clip and leave the rest.
I would have it all off. She is beautiful with the hair, but I think she would look totally stunning hogged and clipped. I love a good cob clipped out - I'd get sharpening those blades!!!!
now my last horse was hogged and looked lovely - but i would say yours looks beautiful without touching her - So i voted ' move away from the horse with those clippers' lol!
She is lovely - if you do decide to hog though - go the whole hog (no pun intended lol) dont hog and leave feather doesnt look right.
yes she would - she WOULD look lovely hogged, clipped and trimmed. She does also look lovely hairy - but it depends what you want to do - hairy and mud dont mix, dressage and long mane/hairy (although not supposed to matter) would look better trimmed and easier to look after than hair.
Nooooooooooooooo
Look at those feathers!!!!!! I would LOVE a horse with lots of feather.
I don't like the look of a hogged and de-feathered horse. They're meant to be hairy, makes them cute
Put those clippers DOWN lol
Hmmm, I used to be a hairy-fan, now I am the owner of a hogged show cob!! I think it depends on the horse, and looking at her, I would vote to leave her natural - she has a Welshy look about her, and I think that suits the hair and feather.
If you do hog her, you need to give her a full on hog, clip out legs etc, or it will just look odd. I guess it boils down to you - what do you want to do with her, and why do you want to hog her? How big is she? If she is under 15hh I would not touch her with clippers. Is it from a maintenance point of view (easier to groom/look after) or do you intend to show her - if you intend to show her, and she is over 15hh I would clip her.
Clip off legs and pull mane. Can't really see from the angle of the photo but it looks like she has a weak neck (could just be the angle of the photo though!) and this would be more obvious if you were to hog her. If she had a bit more muscle on her neck though, she would look nice.
My coloured has his legs clipped off as he gets very dry heels, but also cause his feathers are a bit rubbish not like yours!! I pull his mane to match him up and his tail was pulled when showing although now its not its just nice!! Personally i prefer mine with his legs off and used to be fully clipped before retired, although I think I prefer yours with everything left on, if she gets hot just blanket clip and running plait in her mane to keep her neck a bit cooler when riding thats what i do to my arabs mane.
I really hate to see hairies being ridden - ok between the shafts but for ridden work she needs hogging and those awful hairy legs trimmed.
Trimmed, not clipped, unless she is clipped all over which depends on workload.
You can get an excellent finish with blenders or thinners and a comb. It should look as if no feathers grew as opposed to having had them hacked off.
I am sorry but everytime this thread comes to the top of the list I read it as should I hog roast... I keep getting visions of your poor pony going round on a spit...
I've gotta traditional cob, and when he went to working livery, for ease of use, they asked if they could take off his feathers & clip him out including hogging!!! So I said yes, admittedly with trepidation.
Then I saw him! My new horse! Clipped out and gorgeous, I hardly recognised him. The only thing I insisted that they didn't trim was his whiskers round his muzzle and round his eyes, and horses use these to navigate, particularly in the dark, and I wanted to keep his gorgeous hairy muzzle.
He's got sweet itch, so it makes sense to hog him to keep him cool, plus with big hairy feathers you never get to the feather mites which inevitably you have to deal with. So I'm looking at my boy at the mo and just itching to get the clippers out again!!!
Just a suggestion: why don't you clip her out, do the deed, including feathers & mane, THEN if you don't like it, you can always let her grow them again? As winter's coming on, just think how easy she'll be to do without all that coat & feathers around? She'll look absolutely gorgeous, believe me. She's a good-looking gal now, as she is, but I reckon she'll look absolutely superb after you've done her.
