Please help me choose which 4 x 4 to buy - I am going mad with all the looking and choosing. I have up to £4k to spend but would prefer to keep it nearer £3k. Thank you Thank you Thank you.
We have had 5 Discoveries and although we like them all, I would recommend you look for an older model. Our latest is an '04 Tdi and it's not as good as our previous ones - big fat tyres get clogged with mud at the drop of a hat and render it useless for towing in fields! The computerised traction control isn't as good as having a manual diff lock.
The Fourtrak's are brilliant! Maybe not as comfy as some of the others but by far the best towers. We're on our second and will certainly want another one next time. Son has just pranged his Mitsubishi Double Cab; because the parts are so expensive the insurance company might scrap it so not good if you're on a budget! I know a J reg Fourtrak which has sailed through all the MOTs needing nothing ever doing to it, it's only had tyres and a battery ever and that has been thrashed around the farm; it's not pretty anymore but it still handles whatever they want to tow as well as ever! Several on here have them too.
Thanks everyone. I have been out trying them and as I have a huge stomach and little legs I need an adjustable seat and unfortunately I can't drive the Landrover as I can't reach the pedals and get the seat in the right place. However, the Shogun was fine! So it looks like the decision is made for me.
I've owned all of the vehicles you mentioned. Discovery, Shogun and Fourtrak are all very good to tow with. The Trooper is absolutely naff in my opinion....completely gutless.
Depends which trooper you have, the newer models are incredible. You cannot even tell you are towing its so powerful (although that may or may not be an advantage!)
I'll be another vote for the Fourtrack, loved mine! I've also had a shogun and it was a living nightmare, cost me over £10,000 for 2 new engines and other work , only ran for 6 months (not consecutive!) of the 2 years I owned it! I have a Nissan Terrano at the moment and it's brill too although I think it wouldn't be quite the workhorse of the fourtrack.
