My mare has a pollen allergy, at the moment she is demented with it. Have tried lots of herbal tablets over the last 3 years but this is her worst year yet. I try to ride only at night and she wears a pollen nose net. These things definately help but at the moment, local farmer seems to have sown oil seed rape all around our fields, house and stables so she cannot get away from it. This is the worst time of year for her as oil seed rape and blossom from trees and gorse bushes etc are the worst for her. Some days she shakes her head so bad she almost goes down and I almost come off. I know she cannot help this as it is a genuine condition. Someone told me to try Piriton (human tablets) as they use them for their horse. My vet did not think this was a great idea. Any ideas????

Piriton can certainly help, my vet agreed it was worth trying with one of mine and it helped him. I have also used homeopathic remedies with success, in my view it is worth trying anything to relieve their distress.

Hi, my horse has had a pollen allergy for the past six summers although he's not a head shaker he coughs and wheezes and I have tried everything from Vet meds, supplements and homeopathy and none really helped that much must admit haven't tried piriton.

At the moment he his on herbs from Equinatural, started them in late march and so far so good. Have alook at their website. Jen at Equinatural has an allergic horse herself and is very helpful.

Good luck I know how distressing this can be both for you and the horse.

My 3yr old mare has a bad rash and wheezes it makes her reluctunt to go faster than a slow plod when ridden, have had vet out she took bloods etc said her chest was a bit noisy but didnt give me anything for it, just said wash her with melaseb or hibiscrub because of her young age i am very concerned i want to try some homeopathic remedies but not sure what any advice??

I have a cob who started as a headshaker, nosenet cured that, but this year thought it was the end for him. Allergic to spring grasss, or to be exact grass when growing. Can also recommend equinatual and management. Have a look at their website, they are very helpful and have a herd of horses themselves with different problems. I also feel i am paying for the product only and not fancy packaging. Good luck

Try a full face mask so that eyes and ears are covered as well as nose. The full mask I have doesn't cup around the nostrils, so I use a nose net on the noseband when riding and a full mask on top. That seems to do the trick; oil seed rape was the killer for my ned.

Good luck.
