I see from H&H news that Polly Dickson, co-founder of Derby House saddlery has died at the age of 81.

I used to love visiting the original shop in Newburgh. Back in the day you went to Robinsons for everyday stuff but if you wanted something special you went to DH. That little shop was a treasure trove of little rooms that seemed to go on and on. I STILL have the yard coat I bought from there what must be getting on for 30 years ago. It was never the same when they moved to the flashy showroom up the road.

Definitely the end of an era.

How sad ☹️

I have a fancy brow and that come from them, might stick it on the ponio tomorrow as a little tribute.

When they closed their local store, they had a HUGE sale and my mum took me for my birthday shopping trip! Dream birthday!

It moved to Eccleston when they sold it to the Herford? based company? Paul carried on working for them for a bit and then moved to Ireland and worked for TRM on the Curragh

That's sad. I always hoped the website would pop back up at some point, It was weird the way that went.

I loved a Saturday afternoon wander round Derby House, there was one not far from me in Gloucestershire.
I notice Millberry Hill are selling some rugs that look identical to the waterproof fly rug I bought from DH. I really rate it for a budget rug

Me too 🙂. We’d do a day trip to take in the pre fire damaged Robinsons and the original Derby House.

Robinsons for the everyday basics and DH for the aspirational equipment. DH let me walk out of the store with three secondhand dressage saddles to try on my horse at home.

Parbold - now you do take me back.

Anyone remember buying foxhead buttons from DH for your keepers tweed jackets? I, (sadly), had a blue set and a green set which got swopped over to match my tie when I showed bay or grey hunters!! Awful now, I know!

I used to get so excited when I saw they had a trade stand at agricultural shows or events I was attending. Always made a bee line for it!

I miss DH so, so much. It was always my go to for affordable, decent own brand rugs.
I went to get a liner for my DH turnout rug only to find they had closed down 😭. It’s my most waterproof 0g turnout as well so was well annoyed as I now need a waterproof flyrug and don’t know what to go for. As some are a fortune yet probably leak and not sure how some of the cheap ones fit so may just end up with rubs instead of a wet horse.

as above look @ Millbry Hill their elite waterproof fly rugs looks identical to my Derby House one. Ive been very pleased with mine

Yes @Goldenstar I remember the CAM catalogue.

When I was setting up my yard from scratch they got a few orders from me, along with Robinsons and DH.

Comparing prices with the catalogues in front of you, with the page corners turned down to find what you were thinking of buying, so much easier than endless tabs open on a small laptop screen. (but then I'm someone who still reads 'real' books and doesn't use a kindle)

I am another who remembers the CAM catalogue and like @reynold I kitted out my yard when we moved here 24 years ago with their stuff.

The only thing I would say is that their order management was rather iffy and I ended up getting some stuff delivered but not the rest of the order and when I queried it they said they would send the rest of the order out. They did but then the whole order turned up again a few weeks later. I phoned them up to let them know to arrange collection which they never did so I ended up with a double order but only paying for 1 order.
