Tonight was a bit of an impromptu polo "taster" night. The playes: a bunch of people (mostly students) of varying riding abilities, and mostly no polo experience. The ponies: riding school ponies, occasionally used for such a session, but not all particularly eager to have numpties flailing mallets around their heads.
First we had a session on the ground of learning how to swing the mallets. Then, we had a lesson in putting up the tails so they stay put up, etc. Then, we all got on, and practised hitting a soft inflatable ball around (aforementioned numpties, hard balls, and arena mirrors probably not being a good combination
).
I did such a session once before, and had a horse that wouldn't go near the ball and spent most of the time galloping around in circles. This time, I made sure someone else was stuck with that horse, and got a fab little pony that didn't mind my mad flailing at all...only problem was he wouldn't neck-rein to the left very well, so we had a certain lack of steering...
We finished with a little game, since we had 8 people. It was total mayhem, and super fun!
I even managed to hit the ball a few times.
