Out on a pretty standard hack this morning with my OH. Harry, my NF gelding was dragging, which may have been because he was tear arsing around the field in the thunder and rain last night, or it may have been because he was just in a lazy mood.
We'd been out for an hour or so, and came to the junction of three bridleways when a couple of youngsters we know came along with a friend. The girls were on a Welsh x Arab and a NF respectively and the friend on a 16hh big cob, as we were all heading the same way, we decided to ride together and were just about to set off when another friend turned up on her 16.2hh hunter / cob mare, who happens to be Harry's only true love. Actually what he loves to do is chase her at a canter / gallop.
Off we all went, with Molly (the hunter / cob) at the front then most of the others and Harry and my OH bringing up the rear. We got to a nice wide bit, where we usually canter, and with a shout from the front Molly set off at a canter. Harry threw his head about in that 'Daaaaad, she's getting awaaaayyyy' sort of way, but I had to let the other three go first, before I could let him loose.
The second I said "go on then" we were off. Actually I think I got to "G" and we were off, a few paces at canter turned into a flat out gallop and by the time we were half way along the 1/4 mile path we had passed to two girls, and were homing in on the cob at VERY high speed when we reached the end of the path.
MY OH, who was right behind us as we set off, said all she saw was the pair of disappearing up the path, weaving between the other two ponies.
Harry is 14.2hh standing on his tippy toes, but damn! That pony can go.
