I just can't believe this. Just got my local paper and 2 shetland ponies have been killed in Whitchurch. I often saw these 2 in their paddock, they belonged to a nursing home. A 17 and 14 years old have been arrested, Will try and find a link to the story. So sad, and so frightening when it happens close to home. www.shropshirestar.com

That is absolutely disgusting. Those poor ponies! The residents at the nursing home must be distraught too. I would happily see capital punishment brought back for crimes like this.

My son has just come in from school and the jungle drums at the school are saying that one of these youths was a vets son who stole his fathers shotgun. There may not be any truth in it but if there is it somehow makes it even worse.

I hope (even though they are children) they will be punished accordingly.

I can not believe how Kids/Adults get a kick out of destroying animals and peoples lives. What if the guns had been pointed at actual people it doesn't bare thinking about.

Lets wait and see what the out come will be?

theres also a cat been shot too. a family pet. its about time these hideous people were given life sentances or hanged.

It saddens me to think that any human being (if you could call these imbeciles human) could be so callous as to shoot much loved pets for "fun".

We, as decent members of society, are reaping what those in authority sowed when they decided to shun discipline and adequately harsh punishments in favour of community orders and tagging. Feral youths can do exactly as they please and there seems to be no means of stopping them. Very, very sad.

Well said Grumpy_Herbert, but no doubt there will be some holier than thou do-gooders who will try justify the evil b..tards actions by saying they come from an under privelaged background, or where high on drugs and need "help" with their problem.

Another disgraceful, sickening act of cruelty. I think everyone should write letters of support for Maggie's Law to Daniel Kawczynski MP
the MP for Whitchurch area and either e-mail them to
mail@daniel4shrewsbury.co.uk
or send by post to
Daniel Kawczynski MP
House of Commons
London SW1A 0AA
asking him to raise as a matter of urgency the necessity for Maggie's Law in light of a second case of equine deaths related to gun crime and youth.

The MP for Whitchurch area is actually Owen Paterson (it comes under North Shropshire). Otherwise agree it is a good idea to contact him. He and his wife both hunt and are horse owners so I think he would be keen to support this.

Absolutely awful. But sadly the punishment will never match the crime will it. It really angers me that people-no matter how young or old- can find the mutilation, stabbing, shooting, killing or maiming of animals fun. By that of course I don't mean hunting or taking part in a licensed shoot but these scum who seem to get a big kick out of seeing an animal suffer.
I just cannot come to terms with what goes through the minds of these people at all.
Whether horses, ponies, cats or even back garden wildlife, it all has to stop.
I can remember years back someone shot one of my mum's cats with an air rifle. Luckily it only got an injured tail. I was just a teenager then but I vowed to get even with whoever was responsible if I caught them. I never found out who did it though.
The problem is that a lot of the time those responsible are rarely caught. Those that are receive small penalties for their actions. How the hell is this sending the message home?
One day just one day someone needs to me made an example of. The law needs to get tougher with these people and try to deter individuals from performing such acts.
I welcome Maggies Law and other forms of public pressure to try and get this stupid government to listen.

[/ QUOTE ]True. But I know more on this subject than is fair to say... without consent from some of the family. Suffice to say, said vet is very worried about his reputation and future career.

I knew one of those arresteed, years ago. When I knew him, I couldn't think of him doing something like this. Now I don't know at all.

Would someone be kind enough to link a report to it? I heard it via family, rather than the media.

I -really- hope they don't pass by this website, otherwise I'm in for a lynching.

I think anyone who uses this vet should boycott him as a protest at the behaviour of his kid. Parents have got to start taking responsibility for their offspring.

I agree, but tbh, I would imagine that there will be serious repercussions for him anyway, as the powers that be, do not look too kindly on shotgun owners whose guns are allowed to fall into the wrong hands.

Shocking story.

Yes I see what you are saying but I feel that courts still don't look on animal abuse as a serious issue, although as you say maybe as a shotgun is involved this case will be different.

Yup we are singing from the same hymn sheet.

Sadly, I don't think these thugs will get what they deserve.

I always say, instead of using cats; dogs; horses etc at Huntingon Life Sciences; use these people who kill; maime and abuse animals; see how they like it: I've spoken to a member of the police and RSPCA and they both agreed with me;
Don't they say 'an eye for an eye'

Perhaps more people like you should speak up.

My son had his horse killed by our neighbours. They threatend they would "get him" and they did. Even though we took steps to move him from where he was liveried and told no-one. They made extensive enquiries and they found him.

What is more shocking is that the neighbours are farmers and also own 6 show ponies! so they know only too well how upsetting this was. By the way it was only 5 days before christmas my son was only 15 years old. It has scared him for life - He hasn;t ridden since.!

One lady has told a friend of mine that they phoned her up and tol dher they were "going to get T***o" She hasn't come forward. I know it is because she is frightend for her own ponies.
BUT if she had phoned to warn me perhaps my sons horse would still be here today! The PM said there was no natural reason for hs death. the vet said "It was an allergic reaction to some sort of a drug" The Patholigist said it would cost tens of thousands to find out which drug.

As you say hopefully as a shotgun was involved the powers that be will deal with this with an appropriate sentence, but I am not holding my breath. According to more recent reports in the paper the 17 year old is remanded in custody until 30 May and the 14 year old in local authority care. There is a lot of speculation as to who is involved and various vets names are being mentioned. I have been at my vets a lot this week and have found myself wondering but I don't think any of them have a son of that age. I don't know if I would boycott the vet if it was one of mine, would need to know all the facts before I stopped going to a vet I trusted. When I have heard of this sort of thing in the past I have always thought of youths from a certain background being involved, just shows you shouldn't make assumptions doesn't it, surely if anyone should grow up with a respect for animals it is a vets son

If the vet is a good vet, why boycott him?.and is the 14 or the 17 year old the vets son?

I agree taking responsibility for our kids.but at 14 and 17?...can't believe at the ages these 2 sickos are at they didn't know they were doing something wrong.

Think the vet will be in enough grief right now..just imagine finding out your own kid had done something so terrible......how must the vet feel as a parent?.not to mention the fact he is likely to have repercussions from the police re his shotgun licence etc.

Seems like the court system is taking this offence seriously.,the older one locked up til 30th may(if I read that right) and the younger one in a youth place too?......

I do agree though.some holier than thou do gooder will come along and try to find a reason/excuse for this behaviour.and in true form, no doubt some other deserving cause will throw money at the problem and maybe take these 2 on some nice holiday somewhere.

Sometimes kids just turn out bad cos they are.

I think it is the 14 year old who is the vets son. As I understand it, it was the vets son who stole his fathers shotgun and according to the paper it is the 14 year old who is facing charges for theft of a firearm (or something similar). But this is all supposition on my part I should add. I agree about how the vet must be feeling. I keep looking at my 14 year old son and thinking what would I do if it was him. Although have to say he is the softest lad around animals and I really cannot believe it would happen, but possibly the parents of these lads thought the same.
