Thanks to each and every one of you for taking time to answer my questions! I appreciate it a lot!
It's so typical of me to fall in love with a breed that's close to impossible to find where I live I wouldn't mind getting a young horse and wait a few years for them to grow. Actually, I might even prefer that when I think about it!
I've learned today the highland ponies weigh about as much as my 16.2 horse does! That makes it a bit easier for me to understand just how massive they are!
I know several taller riders that have/ride NF's. One shows succesfully under saddle as well. A decent native with a good depth of girth takes up the leg.
I started off with a Fell pony as a teenager and sadly outgrew her (I am 5'10"). I then had a lovely NF X who massively overgrew to 16.2! He was safe as houses but a bit of a plod. I then bought an old-fashioned RID who was small and chunky but he also overgrew to 16.2. I now have an Irish cob youngster and you've guessed it, he's overgrown!
If I was going to get another, I'd buy a dales or dales X, as I enjoy getting something a bit different every time - but always with native blood. Personally, I don't feel comfortable on anything below 15hh so I had to think slightly outside the pony box.
