As above really, I am having a saddle made to fit my horse, he is a 17hh hunter type witha large shoulder and quite high wither. My saddler has advised me to initially use the Pount Strap and the balance strap. Surely using the Point Strap will pull the saddle down on his withers?

Any advice will be gratefully appreciated.

It seems a little extreme using the point and balance strap but if the tree and panels are a very good fit the point strap should not pull the saddle down.

Did you ask the saddler why they thought you needed point and balance?

A point strap will only pull the front down if it's able to be pulled down, there are different ways to fit a saddle but if the tree is relatively flat, and the fit at the front is bang on, then no, it won't pull it down. Choice of girth straps is as much about girth groove placement as much as anything else. Point and balance is often a very secure girthing, but different horses need different options, sometimes even the same horse needs different options if it has two saddles.
