My son shows his pony, and while generally the pony completly refuses to do anything more than a slow trot in the ring with him, (but thats another problem!) - when cantering around with all the others he does get stronger, which makes my son nervous

The pony is a chunky section C so he has to go in the large breeds classes, which means he is cantering around with some large section Ds etc so I can't really blame him.

I was thinking about putting a slightly stronger bit in him so that he has a bit more stopping power if needed. My son has good hands (after a lot of work) so I am confident he won't be jerking the poor pony about in the mouth but I can't decide what to do.

a jointed small cheek pelham with roundings
a straight bar pelham with roundings
a loop ring show bit
any other option suitable for M&M classes

For showing in large breed M&M Novice I would use a wilkie snaffle (i think u call it a loop ring show bit) as it is just a stromnger snaffle but still smart in the ring or for Open I would use a pelham with split reins (much smarted than roundings). Hope that helps.

Thanks to both of you. He is in an eggbut snaffle at the momment. I will probably try the loop ring bit as I don't like the look of a pelham without 2 reins and I am sure my son can't manage that much knitting at once!
