Ok well Toto normally has chaff in winter and just grass and hay in summer, he gets a bit tubby! But in winter he tends to lose a bit of weight, but he's fine and can stay nice and round on haylage and Hi-Fi Lite chaff. Was wondering about getting him some pony cubes such as these to go in his snack ball or with his chaff. But, will they make him fizzy? He doesn't need any more energy, so no fizz please! Are there any cubes that contain all of the vits/mins he needs?

Thanks

If you are worried about fizziness, then High Fibre Cubes are probably a better bet than normal Horse & Pony Cubes, as they normally have a lower cereal content.

To get all his vit/mins from the cubes, you would have to feed the manufacturer's recommended amount which is often quite a substantial quantity. Instead, you could feed broad spectrum vit/min supplement such as Equivite or Benevit in with his chaff.

Haha knew I'd forgot to type something! Yeah was supposed to say, would High Fibre cubes, or slow release energy cubes be better than normal cubes.

Yup last year he had a vit/min supplement but was going to feed someting containing them instead

Well the recommended amount of Spiller's High Fibre Cubes for an 13hh pony is 2kg - so that gives you an idea of how much you would have to feed to supply all vit/mins!

You could feed a balancer such as Baileys Lo Cal but I think the pellets would be too small to work properly in a snack ball, so would have to be fed in the chaff instead. A vit/min supplement would work out a lot cheaper though!

VioletStripe - I think that would be better for summer, as he can lose weight in winter so he needs high calorie intake really

[/ QUOTE ] Sorry, I thought your post said he got fat in summer, lost some weight in winter but still stayed nice and round?

But why do you want to give him something more if he is keeping the weight on when fed on the haylage and chaff? If he is the correct weight on haylage and chaff, is getting his vit/mins from the supplement, and has the correct energy for the job, then surely his diet is correct? Or is it because you see other people feeding cubes and mixes and feel that your pony should have some too?

Because I was wondering about feeding him something to replace the supplement, he is very fussy and doesn't really like eating supplements.

No I don't want to feed my pony mix or cubes because other people do

Mixes send him loopy anyways.

Ah well that is a different question then if he doesn't like the supplement! Why not use a balancer like Baileys Lo Cal as suggested by the other poster - that will supply all vit/mins and it is pelleted so more likely to be palatable.

Still am confused why you think your pony needs 'more' though!

I use those exact cubes, and they are excellent. They are made by Spillers and are the same as regular cubes except a lot cheaper - they are missing the magnesium. He would be unlikely to get a full serving in a snack ball, so if you are feeding these in a relatively small amount, it might be worth giving a vitamin and mineral supplement or lick.

Thanks Sooty - yeah he'd probaly get half in his dinner and half in a snack ball

The High-Fibre cubes sound a good idea, might e-mail Spillers to see if they suggest them too

He gets a HorseLyx vitamin and mineral likit if he's tied up, he loves it and has a brown sticky nose for ages, his fave trick is rubbing his nose on me and covering me in brown gunge

Omg my horse does exactly the same thing. Yesterday I took some baby wipes with me to clean her face (much to her disgust I might add). After this she then made the loudest snort I have ever heard as if to say dont you dare do that again!

As for the cubes I feed Bess the high fibre Pegasus cubes in her ball and feed and they do not make her fizzy at all, nor do they make her fat. I mix her vit supplement with molychop, cubes and garlic flakes and she does not seem to notice it at all.
