Our pony always walks straight onto the trailer and travels well. I never feel him moving about.

Yesterday I took him out and had another pony in the trailer too (first time I've towed him with another). He was clumping around alot on corners and when I parked up someone said, 'gosh he's moving alot'.

Today we took him out on his own in the trailer and again he was moving about alot. Only on left hand bends though. In fact when we got there he had pulled a back shoe off and there were scuff marks up the side of the trailer.

So why has he suddenly lost his balance when he has alwyas travelled fine? I took those corners so slowly and he still stumbled

I'd get his pelvis and back checked. The same happened to one of mine and it turned out his pelvis was uneven, probably done it messing about in the field.
Have you notices any other changes maybe in his ridden work or the way he stands.
I have also heard somebody on here say once that their horse had an inner ear infection that affected the horses' balance and made them unstable in the trailer.
Just a thought

Hmmm... Id keep an eye on it and see if he keeps doing this. Because a pony I used to have travelled fine for ages then suddenly he began clumping about. It got worse and worse until he began literally throwing himself on the floor! He seemed to totally over-balance himself even when the trailer wasnt moving (ie. as soon as he was loaded he would begin falling). He'd never had a bad experience and we'd always towed very carefully. We moved the hind partition over so he could spread his hind legs out and from then on he was again perfect! So if yours gets worse, try moving it over

Yes, he always travels on the right hand side. When we had the other pony in the other day, mine was still on the right because he is bigger than the other one.

I can't think that there have been any changes in the feel of him when he's ridden, or when he's standing. I'll check him out today.

Ear infection did cross my mind. He didn't mind his ears being touched for grooming or to put his bridle on. I would have thought that if his ear was sore, he would have been a bit head shy.

a conundrum

He's not had a bad experience either and walks straight onto the trailer with no hesitation. I mentioned this problem to someone else and they suggested taking out the back half of the partition, so I might try that next time we take him out.

Thanks.
