And any good advice!

For the last 6 months I have had a 5 yr old gypsy cob who we foster from a local charity. He is very sweet but very in your face, very unrespectful and an utter troublemaker. He rubs on everything ( have checked him for mites) - I think he just get hot under all his mane so he mainly rubs that and now his mane is all ratty. He stands on everything, my mare hates him, he just pushes through anything in his way - people, fences - despite 6 months of consistent and firm ground work - he at last respects me but noone else. He breaks fencing, pulls outelectric fencing, He has ripped his rug, my mares rug with her in it and this morning he had pushed through a thick thorny hedge on to a road. He is out 24/7 in 4 acres of ok grazing. Fed token chaff and speedibeet feed twice a day and more hay than he needs really twice a day.

I thought he was bored so to give him a job I started long reining him and then sent him away to be broken to harness by a well respected trainer. He got sent back after 8 weeks because he was perfectly happy driving for 9 times out of 10 and then would just throw a paddy for no reason, buck and throw himself on the floor, breaking the shafts. The trainer said in thirty years he had never experienced such a unprovoked teenage tantrum and said he would be unreliable to drive. I can ride him but really am too heavy so we do bits but again he just either can't be bothered and won't move, or he has a tantrum and runs through the bit. Again I have spent six months working with him althoygh only two or three times a week as thats all ican do due to time but he is either very dim as he never improves or he is very clever and is utterly bored and just amusing himself.

I am at my wits end and just want to send him back but feel terribly guilty. I am sick of having to spend my time sorting out problems he creates or working with a pony who really just suits himself. He isnt nasty at all. He is meant to be a companion pony that could be ridden occasionally but I don't think that suits him at all. I have had horses for a long time so am not a novice owner/rider and now find myself focussing all my energies / money /time on the little monkey when my own mare who is an absolute angel to look after, hack, compete etc is doing nothing in the field.

At the moment I am just fed up of it all, the horses ar kept at home and for the first time in 6 years of having them at home I just want to give up and put my mare in livery, get her back on track and enjoy her.

Send him back! Lots of nice neddies out there. I have a 4year old pone who is trying but sounds much easier than yours, and at least mine was good to back.

You sound really fed up with him. Send him back, with a donation, and let someone else get all excited about having him on loan.

Oh dear welcome to the world of cobs! Sounds quite typical to me, The longer you keep him, the more you will resent him, put him back to the charity and explain to them what you've said here, Someone else will loan him and perhaps have a smaller rider that could do a bit more with him!
