He got turned out yesterday in new field, hooned round like a t**t and has twisted fetlock or something. Vet's been, ordered box rest and bute for 7 days will scan next week. Feel sooo peed off. Had dressage tomorrow, had just taxed lorry sent entry fees etc etc. Now maybe running the risk of the dreaded L word as he's on box rest and a bit prone to it anyway. Has anybody els expeerienced the L word when horse on box rest? Need cheering up
 
Keeping my fingers crossed that his injury turns out to be a minor tweak.

Re: risk of laminitis then obviously cut out all hard feed and just feed forage (but you probably know that already). If horse is very prone to lami then soak hay to b*ggery to ensure low carbohydrate levels.

If (god forbid) injury is very serious then there is possible risk if weight is transferred to opposite foot - best to consult with vet if that is the case.
 
Do you mean the La word or the Ly word....

If lymphangitis(Sp), yes, a project horse I had 18 months ago had it, best way to avoid it is to cut out all starchy feed & bandage all 4 legs (useful info in hindsight!)
 
Thakns TGM and Jemayni. I was refering to the La word!

Fortunatley he's being very sensible for once and lying down quite a lot but is he doing that cos the front feet hurt as well, God Im imagining all sorts of horrors.

Vet's told me to cold hose 2 x daily and bandage both hind legs which Im doing religiously. He has a diet for a laminitic anyway ie high fibre cubes, speedibeet and alfalfa, no cereal or starch but have cut it right down to just enough to mix with the bute and swapped haylage for hay although he's had haylage for last 2 years with no prob's and vets approval.

Dont know what else i can do really except cross fingers.
 
My laminitic has been in for 5 months without much problem... I just ensured she was on thick bedding to keep the pressure of her feeties (let the shavings compact in there).

I havent needed to soak hay.. but always a good idea

Well his front feet are nice and cool now with no pulse so think I cut his feed etc just in time. Our physio has rented us a magnetic pulse machine for the week to use in place of cold hosing as it's supposed to help the circulation better. Has anybody used on of these before with success or not?
