Very sadly yesterday another small pony was knocked down and killed on Fore Down Pensilva, Cornwall. I don't know at what time the accident happened but it was before 4pm as that was when we went to walk our dogs. But how saddened and annoyed I am to find that the pony is still there today at 6pm. He is lying 5ft from the road near the cattle grid all bloated with "police aware" tape tied round one of his fore legs; not a very nice sight to see alongside a main road and beauty spot but more importantly a sorry end for a lovely moor pony. We have a very good company that deal with these things not 4 miles away so why has the poor pony not been removed!!!!

Tomorrow, I'll be making lots of calls to local authorities - any suggestions?

Will he make a nice meal for some wildlife, as he would 'in the wild', which he essentially is?

Well, yes, he might, but 5ft from the road will cause more accidents, as people swerve to avoid foxes and other scavengers. Much as I enjoy nature, I don't think I'd relish watching a pony being pecked by crows and magpies, either!

Call the Local Authority, OP. Or maybe the hunt would pick him up?

I kinda agree with this, but like Fransurrey said, not right by the side of the road. It would be better if they could take him somewhere else, out of the public eye, it would upset me greatly to see a rotting, half eaten pony. Poor pony, R.I.P

Poor pony :(

How crass for the police to put tape round its legs! Perhaps someone will stick a parking fine sticker on it too? Heartless.

:mad:thing is we all know who owns these ponies but as soon as one is hurt or killed or causes an accident no one owns them... thats our local farmer....sheep are left dead for weeks i have also seen cows, left for weeks..

I'm sorry to say but maybe the poor pony has been left at the scene for a reason.
Far, far too many people these days speed along rural roads without any concern for the potential consequences of their actions. I mean, What's a couple of hundred pounds for a repair bill for their car when they can drive away in ignorant bliss, not knowing or caring whether the poor animal they hit is dead, or whether in fact it is lying there with a broken leg...suffering until someone else finds it and arranges for it's humane destruction ?

Take a look on the New Forest Verderers website and read the reports of ponies, cows, sheep, pigs and donkeys that are the result of RTA's. Many of these poor animals being the result of Hit and Runs.
Read the reports of animals being found with broken legs and serious lacerations.....left for dead at the side of the road while the driver speeds along on their merry way.
Only just over a week ago, on 8th September, a foal was hit by a car and left in a ditch with a broken back ! Humanely destroyed once an agister arrived on the scene, but that poor foal was left in agony because some ignorant driver thinks it is acceptable to speed in an area where animals are known to roam freely. It's the New Forest FFS....not a feckin motorway !
You can read reports here - http://www.nfed.co.uk/index2.htm of the livestock killed, or injured then destroyed as a result of RTA's.
Leaving the poor beast at the scene, after being humanely destroyed (IF it wasn't killed outright), as a grim reminder to motorists that if they don't watch their speed, or have consideration for the animals who live there, is maybe the shock tactic that is needed.

PONIES DON'T DENT - THEY DIE !

Exactly as above...in the NF they purposefully leave the ponies for a few days as a grim warning. Very sensible tbh, make people realise the consequences

I don't see the issue the pony is dead not injured and it will do the drivers good to see it .
Of course it can't stay there permanently but it's doing no harm and might just make some driver slow down .

We were on holiday in the New Forest only a couple of weeks ago - it's my favourite place ever, but the speed some people drove really shocked me - there were donkeys and ponies crossing the road, and vans were just speeding round mares and foals, not even taking their foot off the accelerator.

Spot on tango's mum, this morning I spent a lot of time on the phone and from what I have been told the pony was killed late on Friday, the police attended and the owner was contacted and said he would remove the pony first thing Saturday. For some reason this did not happen and the police seemed very sorry that the pony was still there today and said they would chase it up ASAP which they did. Cornwall Council said that if it was not reported to them before 5pm on Friday they would not pick it up till Monday, so glad they are not wasting my council tax on trivial things such as this!!!!!!!!! (sorry). I feel the police did all they could in this case and it was the owner that has let the pony down unless anyone knows different?
