I have a 12.2hh welsh sec b, who I drive. he had lami 2 years ago, so I am very aware of his weight. I need to get his weight down whats the best way? I have cut down his hard food, I usually clip him, but as we are not competing this year, I havent bothered. i know its said to not rug heavily to achieve weight loss, but I really dont want to let him get cold!!!

Up the exercise ?
Almost all of my unclipped horses are out without rugs and completely fine. They only get cold if it’s very very wet and cold.

My 2 natives in their winter woollies aren't rugged. One is on soaked hay and minimal grass with about a teaspoon of beet when the others are fed. Not thin yet!

The grass in my summer field is already long and lush so I am in the cruel to be kind phase of winter and rations are being reduced. If you haven't clipped then I doubt a welshie will get cold.

He’s not clipped so dont rug, unless he’s out in terrible windy exposed field all winter?

While out of work there’s no need for much except mixed grass meadow hay, and a mineral balancer, salt.

I’d cut out the hard feed altogether.

Just had the same problem so clipped her out fully, rugged medium weight, her grazing is restricted and no hay still dropping a bit although it has slowed considerably now her coat is growing again

I remember you started the weight loss journey with your boy. He is looking absolutely fabulous. So gorgeous!

OP my native is unrugged and with a teeny tiny clip down the underside of her neck and her chest. I have found not rugging the only way of consistently getting weight off. Along with a very low sugar chaff.

My wooly native has no rug at all, she has her chest and neck clipped out and it doesn't get wet or cold in that area. I rather want her to feel cold so that she might loose weight naturally.
