Had pony vetted and he made very grunty noises in canter including when breathing in. Vet carried out scope exam which has come back completely clear and everything working normally. Because I am a worrier I am still concerned although I want to buy him as he's a lovely chap, possibly not hugely fit. Any advice?

My pony made noise in fast work and it turned out to be early stages of lami, just make sure you check out for any symptoms, it probably isn't that but noisy breathing can be a sign.

Thanks all. He was thoroughly checked over by vet during 5 stage and no signs of lami and he's never had it before but it will be another thing to worry about...:p thanks though.

Any tips on how to get pony fit with no manege/school and one very muddy paddock - lots of hacking up hills? Trotting up hills?

My ex eventer was vetted as a roarer for a previous owner, vetted fine for me and once fit never made a sound. He had previously been kept over bent and tight through jaw line which didn't help.

What breed is he?

I have had two welsh ponies both of which made a noise, but never caused them any problems. Both have rather thick jowl areas, so I suspect there just isn't quite enough room for everything in there!

Some just do, apparently... Bee is a proper snorter as she goes- when she has to concentrate she stops but when she's not she sounds like a little pig.

She was supposed to be a racehorse, so obviously it was all checked out in detail as a racehorse with a wind problem is no good. And it's all clear, it's just her being funny...

My WB makes a noise at canter - he is what is termed a 'high blower' - the vet at his 5 stage vetting said it is nothing of any concern at all.

Hes a welsh x WB :) so that is quite reassuring

she worked him very much 'on the bit' - ie with neck very tucked in (can you tell I am novice :o)

Rusky makes a noise, more when he is unfit or it's hot. He's been scoped twice, haven't found anything either time.

Sounds like the pony has been ridden behind the vertical, not on the bit, on the bit the neck should not be tucked in.

Another horse we owned years ago used to make a noise and he had not quite a tie-back operation but some surgery to reduce the fleshiness in his windpipe.
This did not stop the noise. We afterward realised that the 'noise' was because he was stressed being asked to 'use his back' and work. He did not have the best conformation - with a rather upright shoulder and short neck and we reckoned in the end that was the cause :(
