My elderly pony of 36 who is at grass during the night and in during the day hasn't passed any droppings all morning. He is on good grass and his droppings were runny yesterday. He comes in at 7am has eaten breakfast and a small amount of hay. Looks a bit quiet but ok. No signs of colic or looking uncomfortable. How long is it ok for him not to do any droppings for? He is up to date with worming etc. Obviously taking his age into account I'm a little worried as its been nearly 8 hrs and I always skip out 2/3 droppings at lunchtime.

My old boy, who is 31, sometimes scares the life out of me as he can do just 1 dropping in 12 hours. It is so bad now that I religiously 'log' how many he does.

Overnight last night it was 3 and today 2 1/2 .... he has never done 1/2 of one before

In 12 hours, he can do anything from 1 - 5 (5 being alot and quite rare!).

He did have Peritonitis 18 months ago and something suspect was found behind his spleen (well I think that is where the Vet said, but as I cannot do much about it, I tend to put it to the back of my mind :().

Since then he has suffered from constipation, on and off ... hence I keep a count of them.

Due to his Cushing's he mainly eats damp hay and a high fibre / happy hoof mash, plus a small amount of grass. The hay is spat out most of the time, but he really enjoys sifting through it! The mash goes down a treat though :D

Sadly, due to old age, their stomachs do not work as well as they use to .................

ETS ... fingers crossed that your boy starts to pass more droppings readily soon ...

Many thanks for your replies, he eventually passed at 5.30 last night, still no signs of pain/colic so kept an eye on him over night and he is still fine today.
Fingers crossed he is okay and like you've said it's probably things slowing down with age! Didn't stop him jogging down to his field tonight and shooting off like a loon!
