Hi, can anyone give me some tips on trying to keep a poltice on. Ponio was turned out and within 5min has it off. There was half a reel of gaffer tape holding it on. In his defence hes been in since friday and was prob just lettin off steam.

my foal had an infection from thrush when i bought her ,so had to b poulticed ,i put a disposible nappy over it and gaffa taped it in place followed by a square of feed bag gaffa taped on top of that n it stayed on until i had to change it next time(next morning or on night)

I use animalintex to poultice put that on then bandage then put a nappy on tape with brown tape then put leg in to a plastic feed bag cut bag so it comes just below knee then tape that with brown tape, i have found the brown packing tape works better the duct tape is not stcky enough.

This usually stays on for me even when i have turned horses out with on.

Thanks guys, kinda tried this, pad, nappy, vet wrap, pastic bag, gaffa tape, and the möster tuck it clean off. He is also fresh as hes been in since last friday.

I would use more tape then up and down the length of the leg of the bag if you tape it properly it should be hard to get off i usually have to cut mine off.

If it isnt taped enough and that comes loose then it all seems to come off in one go.

When my highland was younger, he was barefoot and had quite a few infections. I bought him a green canvas poultice boot which I thought would do the trick. He wore it for about 45 minutes and the bottom was out of it completely. The only thing we found that worked with "the thug" was a large square of plastic feed bag over animalintex, about three rolls of vetwrap and another few rolls of gaffer tape. Luckily he doesn't seem to get them now as it used to cost a fortune. He had what the vet thought was laminitis recently and she brought some rather expensive rubber frog supports, which, she told us, would be reusable. Not it you have a highland they're not!! He chopped lumps out of them somehow. The best bit was that he didn't have lami, it was an abscess which the farrier found in seconds.

I to have just had this kinda thing. Could get my farrier out last wk so vet came said it was abscess, 3 days later she came back out and said no it wasnt but took shoe off. Then said it was bruised sole, but if he was still lame by weekend she want to xray him for fractured pedal bone. Farrier came today and found the abscess in about 2 seconds. Poor lad has one in his hind too.
